About Sapele Athletic Golf Club
The founding of the Sapele Athletic Club in its beginning is a matter of conjecture as there is paucity of document evidencing it. However, strong facts, albeit artifacts, exist from which we can hazard it. By the late 19th century, as we have already seen, Sapele was already a Vice Consulate and a “thriving” business/port town and by the turn of the 20th century Sapele has already acquired the status of colonial township classification.
The present site of the club was originally conceived as a golf club. As we shall come to see later, it was originally named “Sapilo Golf Club”. This view is supported by a trophy, which is still in the club archive, donated by Elder Dempster for the first golf tournament in 1913. The tournament was held subsequently from 1914 with the names of the competition winners engraved on the trophy.
