About Seaton Carew Golf Club

People have been playing golf at Seaton Carew Golf Club since 1874, making it the tenth-oldest golf club in England. The club is based in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool on the North Sea coast. When it was first established it was the only golf club in the English counties of Yorkshire and Durham, hence its original name Durham & Yorkshire Golf Club. Originally the course was laid out by Dr. McCuaig with 14 holes, 4 extra holes were added later by the Club Professional James Kay and opened on 3 August 1891. By the mid-1920s the shoreline had retreated Eastward, providing a new area of dunes. With the help of Dr. Alister MacKenzie the course was revamped extensively. That course is now known as the Old Course. There are 22 holes in total which can be configured as three different courses.

Micklem Course 3/3
Holes: 18
The Micklem layout has three Pennink holes making it slightly shorter in length than the more demanding Brabazon Course, however, this is still a great test of golf. This course was used for the English Boys Amateur Strokeplay Championship, the Carris Trophy.

Seaton Carew is a course that has been on my list to play for quite some time and thankfully it didn't disappoint. The clubhouse sits close to the road, but overlooks the putting green,1st tee and 18th green. Inside, is a very large bar area where we were greeted by some very polite bar staff and the incredibly friendly General Manager, Roy who gave us a bit of history …

Cracking links course that is always in tip top condition at any time of year. It's certainly a challenge, but a fair one, hugely enjoyable selection of holes, greens are amongst the best I've played (including lots of top 100 courses). If you love golf (especially links) you'll love Seaton Carew, a true gem.

I was impressed enough with the Bishop & New layouts that I decided to stop in again at Seaton Carew to see the Micklem course. This 18 hole iteration was of course named for famous English amateur golfer, Gerald Micklem. Micklem came into prominence after winning the 1947 English Amateur hosted by Ganton. He was a member of the 1947 & 1949 Walker Cup squads. Off the back…

Many previous reviews have explained the history and complexity of golf at Seaton. Evolution can be a long process and with 3 current 18 hole options the club are in the midst of a consultation exercise with McKenzie & Ebert to create a revised 18 hole routing to combine the best of the current 22 holes and thereby reduce both elevate the golfing experience and reduce the…
