Have had the pleasure of playing this golf course quite often over the years. A true links course with many challenging holes. I’d like to play off the white tees but the course is still challenging off the yellows. Practice facilities are great can take the driver out if you wish to. Chipping green is in brilliant condition with 2 good bunkers The putting green is brilliant in top condition always. The staff and the food is brilliant.

West Lancashire Golf Club was made famous by Harold Hilton, its secretary in the early 1900s, after his two Open wins at Muirfield and Hoylake Hilton is remembered in the modern clubhouse with memorabilia and a photo of him playing in a three-piece suit and smoking a cigarette while in mid-swing. As our intrepid quartet took on these tough links, I wondered how Hilton would have managed to score well with hickory clubs in heavy, often wet tweed. Anyway, thanks to my partner's early blitz of birdies, we threatened to follow in his footsteps in grand style. Sadly, good things rarely last but, while we didn’t live up to the dazzling pace, we did prove that, on a relatively calm sunny day, good scores are possible. Actually, by ‘relatively calm’ I mean a wind which only required a two-club alteration. Goodness knows how a hoolie is accommodated. Regardless, West Lancs was a joy – especially memorable for its fabulous green complexes which were in superb condition but often prompt delight to turn to dismay as approach shots fall from the putting surface into swales or, worse still, bunkers. The potted sand traps are fiendish because they are narrow and the ball often ends up against a vertical face or extraction requires a gymnast’s flexibility to create a stance (twice I was forced to kneel on one leg on grass with one foot in the bunker). West Lancs is at one with nature, fitting beautifully into the landscape and, at £55 for a better-ball competition with sandwiches and soup thrown in, it was among the best-value rounds of my top 100 quest so far.

Een warm welkom bij binnenkomst, een heuse gastheer staat ons al op te wachten en begeleid ons door het clubhuis naar de bar. Hier een pot koffie genuttigd in een echte Engelse sfeer van tapijt en hout, vooral veel hout. De pro is behulpzaam en helpt ons goed op weg! Voor ons een groep van 12 pga-pro's die samen de gehele drivingrange en oefengreen bezetten. De range is smal maar voldoet, de ballen wel iets verouderd, de greens zijn vreselijke wennen; hard en erg snel. Hole 1 is een dogleg par 4 waarbij de starter je voorziet van de nodige tips en een gezellig praatje! De fairways zijn strak gemaaid en de rough staat nog niet zo hoog dat ballen onvindbaar zijn. De greens zijn razendsnel en de (pot)bunkers plaatjes om te zien, je moet er echter niet in komen want dan heb je soms een probleem. De meeste greens zijn voorzien van stijle slopes rondom en her en der van enig ondulatie. Het aanspelen is wennen, je hoeft de greens niet door de lucht aan te spelen want dan ligt de bal geheid achter de green, je moet ze er echt op laten rollen of stuiteren. De eerste holes lopen langs de kustlijn en vervolgens keer je evenwijdig weer terug naar het clubhuis. De 2e lus loopt aan de zijde van de spoorlijn heen en terug, her en der met aanzienlijke hoogteverschillen. Een baan zoals deze heb je er niet veel in Nederland liggen, een topbaan met gastvrije mensen en een relaxte sfeer.

But England has over 1,800 golf courses to choose from, most of them are really worth a visit!
