Although the five times Open Champion and master golf course architect James Braid was born within a short mashie shot of the golf course and learned to play his golf on Elie links it is one layout that he had no hand in developing. There were many legal wrangles over the links in the 19th century and it took a ruling in the Court of Session in Edinburgh before a proper area for golf was marked out on the ancient links land on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. Today it is one of Scotland's most charming seaside courses and hugely popular with visitors who enjoy the quality of the crisp fairway turf and the keen traditional greens.
