Yale was my first experience of a true Raynor course and “template holes”. I came away impressed with Yale itself but the jury was still out on the template holes. The set-up is basic, especially by US standards, with a cafe, simple locker room and small pro shop. The course itself is huge, not just in terms of property size but everything from the fairway width to the size of the undulations seemed super-sized. There are also a lot of blind holes - which I like - but you are unlikely to score well the first time around here. The two disappointments were the firmness of the ground (too soft) and its impact on the “template” holes, which neither played as they were designed, nor the originals from which they were copied. I’d certainly play here again - its pricing and accessibility make it a rare opportunity on the East Coast.
