Real Sotogrande was the second club we visited during a 3 day trip to Sotogrande. Having played La Reserva the first day, I was interested to see this course would compare to the first. Real Sotogrande is the oldest course in Sotogrande and it’s located right by the mediterranean sea, which makes it quite a bit flatter than La Reserva for instance. We walked the course, which I can recommend everyone. You can immediately tell when arriving at the club that it’s on of a certain stature. The clubhouse is old but sophisticated and the people are nice, but in a reserved way. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to practice much, but it was nice to have a putting green right next to the first tee to test the speed of the greens. And oh my, they were fast. I don’t even think I’m exaggerating when I say I’ve lost 18 shots on the green alone! I was completely unable to grasp the speed of the greens. Besides the tough greens, I thought the course was very nice. It’s well thought out and doesn’t have (m)any weak holes. The 7th hole was the favourite of everyone in my group. It’s a relatively short downhill right to left par-4 with water on the right side of the green and a precious view of the mountains in the back. There is a nice half-way hut and the back nine intrigues with more water that comes into play. Although I didn’t even play that bad - or so it seemed - my score was disastrous. However, I still liked the course a lot, and that doesn’t happen too often. I would definitely like to return to Real Sotogrande to have another go!
