I have written a longer piece on the joys of Kington elsewhere so I shall keep this review brief but first off might I point out to all reviewers that the architect who designed the course that opened in 1925 is Cecil Key Hutchison not Hutchinson. Thank you. This is as natural a property as you will find anywhere with sheep grazing and ramblers walking part of Offa's dyke, the great 8th-century fortification to keep out the marauding Welsh, that runs across the course. As one would expect from the highest course in England the views are sensational so do keep your fingers crossed for a fine day as you will have a panorama of seven counties to enjoy. At £30 a round during the week the round is as good value as you will get anywhere in the UK especially given the condition of the course with its springy turf, and firm, close-cut greens. Just keep your fingers crossed that the wind does not blow hard otherwise golf becomes almost impossible up here at 1,284 feet. Otherwise, just rejoice in the wonder of it all, enjoy the risk and reward holes that you will face particularly the driveable, par four 18th, and walk off with a smile on your face. At Kington it is very hard not to.
