Looking for a golf destination not too far from mainland Europe, but with slightly more pleasant weather? With an average temperature of 21 degrees Celsius from December till March, the Canary Islands are a great option to play your next rounds of golf.

The Canary Islands (also known as the Canaries) are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean consisting of eight main islands. The most well-known are  Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma and La Gomera. In total, there are 23 golf courses on the Canary Islands. Most of them (9 in total) are located on Tenerife, 6 on Gran Canaria, 5 on Fuerteventura, 2 on Lanzarote and 1 on La Gomera.

Without a doubt, Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the most attractive options when contemplating a Canary Islands golf trip. However, the other islands are definitely worth a visit and easily reachable by boat.

Golf Courses in the Canary Islands

Of the 23 golf courses in the Canary Islands, the one that currently has the best ratings is Abama Golf. This high-end 18-hole golf course, situated in Tenerife, was designed by golf course architect Dave Thomas. When he designed the course, he wanted Abama to be the Augusta of Europe. Some of the reviewers call this ‘golfers paradise’.

The Abama golf course is located close to the coast which leads to spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Abama golf also offers rooms in their Las Terrazas Abama Resort. This resort offers everything you want when you finish your round of golf on this Canary Island golf course: a swimming pool, restaurant, spa, and sauna.

Another terrific golf course in the Canary Islands is Buenavista Golf. With its location in the extreme northeast of Tenerife, next to the Teno Mountain range, this is one of the most scenic courses in the Canary Islands. Buenavista Golf's clubhouse sits on raised ground at the centre of the course with panoramic views of all of the holes. The course has 6 par-3's, 6 par-4's and 6 par-5's. Of the outward 9 holes, the most demanding are the par-4's while the second part of the course requires more precision on the par-3's, even more so on the 15th and the 17th, as they are situated on the edge of a cliff!

Anfi Tauro Golf on Gran Canaria and is also one of the highest-rated golf courses of the Canary Islands. This 18-hole golf course, designed by von Hagge, Smelek, and Baril (known from the Ryder Cup course Le Golf National) has similar sensational views of the ocean and volcanic mountains. A lot of tee shots are elevated, which is destined to provide some great drama. The back-nine of Anfi Tauro is arguably one of the best stretches of finishing holes of the Canary Island golf courses.
