A lighthouse historically has acted as a beacon for navigational aid for sailors. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, and reefs. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to much cheaper, more sophisticated and effective electronic navigational systems. Many golfers however adore them, perhaps because they see them as a beacon of hope (on their round) or - which is more like - because they are often located on or next to some really iconic golf courses.

When asked about a golf course with a lighthouse, most golfers will immediately mention the 18th hole on the Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort or the 4th (or 15th hole) at Old Head. This is mainly due to the iconic red and white - or black and white in the case of Old Head - striped lighthouse.
