SlicingMyWayThroughLife review

West Cliffs is a fairly new kid on the block but if you ask me this layout and especially the location is certainly (much) better than its current greatest home state rival Monte Rei. The course offers many great holes and some really beautiful views. There is not a lot of week holes here though a few are a bit tricky if you are playing here for the first time as I had no clue where exactly to play my tee shots and which clubs to take not to be punished on some holes. So a few additional direction poles/markers would certainly help to have an even better experience, mainly on holes 17 and 18 as there are no hole maps or pictures on the tee boxes. A free of charge birdie book / stroke saver would solve this problem right away. Now to my favourite holes: short dogleg left Par-4 9th where a good drive will get you close to the green. 11th hole is quite simple but very nice Par-4. And I just love the uphill Par-5 13th and short slightly downhill Par-4 14th hole, real beauties and the best part of the property if you ask me. 17th hole is a great dogleg right Par-4 which would be even better if they had (as already mentioned) a direction marker like one the 14th hole. Same goes for finishing downhill Par-4 where the wind plays crucial role so make sure you have enough club for your approach shot to the green.  All Par-3 holes are very good especially 5th and 16th with its tricky and well protected greens and amazing views. Par-5' are not that long but don't think pars and birdies will come easy. Par-4 3rd is a proper challenge so do your best to find the fairway here.  Just pick the right set of tees and I am sure you will enjoy it despite the wind. What I don't like here or on any other golf courses are the distances between some of the holes which are a bit too long - I don't like the American style of resort golf courses where you need to drive or walk literally to the next county to get to the next tee so I prefer old school designs where the next tee box is next to or not far from previous green.   The course was in very good playing condition but make sure you bring some balls if you are not very accurate of the tee as anything gone off the fairway or first cut is basically a lost ball in most cases. What I didn't understand were some tee off marker placements which were placed right behind the uphill area on two-tier tee boxes so this actually interfered the backswing. Unless they wanted us to use pitching wedges on those long holes 4 and 6! Like at Royal Obidos there is also some construction going on at the property which is also not the prettiest site at the moment. I sincerely hope they will be able to sell the real estate projects as no one wants to see another Bom Sucesso real estate fiasco on this beautiful layout in a couple of years. If I distance myself from course quality and beautiful views and focus solely on the visual appeal I think there are a few (major) mistakes made at West Cliffs which I don't really understand and this makes this golf course not being close to perfect... With all this space that the property has you have to pass the not the prettiest maintenance building to get to the first tee... why - a big visual turndown if you ask me! Second is the yellow/beige roof of the otherwise very nice clubhouse... I just could not stop staring at it from certain high points of the golf course as it looks like some factory and it just doesn't blend in and I think even the dark green or orange roof would fit in much better. Yes I know it resembles the other colors in the area but it just doesn't fit in, period! :P To sum it up I think it is hard to find a better course in continental Europe for such price right now. Obidos area (with Praia D'El Rey, Bom Sucesso and Royal Obidos golf courses) in general is a good golf destination for a few days or a week of proper golf and West Cliffs is certainly a must play...
