The reception was nice with the lady doing a good attempt at speaking to us in Dutch. The facilities aren't that great. The putting green is between the clubhouse and the 9th hole, and it was slow and bumpy. The driving range is now covered which is better. The layout at Des Fagnes has always been one of my favorites in Belgium. Unfortunately the maintenance to the course is going in the wrong direction. Fairways could do with a cut, and the greens are slow. It's still enjoyable to play, but needs attention. A real problem was the pace of play. During the round several of the groups in front of us stopped playing (not at the 9th) and then we ended up behind the slow flights. It were 2 fourballs of seniors. I don't mind seniors, even if they are slow, but if you put 4 of them in one flight, it's going to be a long day for the groups behind. The service in the clubhouse was slow at noon, even if there were not many people. After the round there were a lot of people, so it was quite slow again, but understaneable. The entre cote was ok, but the evening ended with a real high, the sabayon dessert and Irish coffee were excellent. Royal Des Fagnes will lose places in my top 10 in Belgium, because of the weaker course condition than it once head, but it remains an attractive layout.
