In recent years the West Link at North Berwick has gone from being a rather niche 'gem' selection to one of the most revered courses in the world. I recently asked some of the games' best known figures to name their favourite courses in the world and North Berwick was second, only behind Cypress Point. The one word they all used to describe this course is 'fun' and I'm not sure I've played a course which is more fun anywhere in the world. The course progresses out and back along the coast from the golf-obsessed town of North Berwick. It isn't a long course - it's under 6,500 yards from the members' tees - and it is accessible to all. The rough is rarely long, you won't spend much time looking for balls and the walks from tees to greens are negligible. Pars and birdies are possible for most golfers here, but it won't be your score that leaves you feeling exhilarated, it will be the experiences you discover on the way. Here's just a few of those quirks to look forward to to whet your appetite - multiple play over walls, a beach in play (and there's plenty of opportunity to find it!), the original Redan hole and a green which plays like an elephant has been buried under it. The welcome you get at North Berwick is a warm one - they treat you as a member for the day - and there is none of the old school stuffiness here you may find at other places. North Berwick is a throwback to days of yore. If you are a really long hitter you will be able to overpower the course easily given modern equipment and lose much of the course's fun. For the rest of us it is a glorious example of all that was, and still is, great in the game.
