The birthplace of the open. Make sure to also visit the historic Red Lion pub and Old Tom Morris' house next door (a pharmacy now) when you visit Prestwick. You will need to wear a jacket&tie in the clubhouse usually. Not at the moment though due to Covid. Make sure to check out the historic dining room and smoke room. It's a special place with lots of history on display. The course as it plays today is quite different to the 12 hole course that hosted more than 20 Open Championships in the early days. The only unaltered hole is 17 which is still iconic to this day. The first hole used to play as a par 6 from today's practice area over the 14th and 13th fairways to the 16th green. Todays course is the standard 18 holes and a few of current holes are certainly world class. The opening hole is one of the best 1st holes in the game. Prestwick train station is on the right side and the green is placed right next to OB and the train line on the right. Take the risky line for the best angle into the green. Play safe and face a half blind shot. Great hole. The 3rd hole plays over the famous Cardinal bunker. With today's equipment you can easily carry this cross bunker. But it must have been a tough second shot in the early days. Unfortunately the fairway was very wet and Cardinal bunker filled with water due to lots of rain on the day we played. The blind par 3 5th is another iconic hole. The middle section of the course (6-12) plays on less interesting golf terrain. But the finishing golf holes are world class again. The par 4 13th features one of the most ondulating fairways you will find on a golf course and the green makes you speechless. You couldn't build a green like that today anymore or the golf course architect would be called nuts. Hole 15 "Narrows" is truly one of the most narrow fairways I've seen but what a great hole it is. Hole 16 is driveable in the right conditions and again a very wild green. And then comes the famous par 4 17th hole "Alps" hole. The fairway is again quite narrow. You will need to hit a very good shot off the tee. Unfortunately the rough is very thick at the moment so any missed fairway is a potential lost ball. The blind 2nd shot is quite thrilling too. Anything short will find the huge bunker in front of the green. The green is heavily sloped from back to front. Unfortunately the rough around the green is very thick again so anything missed left or right is pretty much a lost ball. I wished the rough was a bit better managed on 17. It's a tough hole nevertheless and such brutal rough on a blind approach shot is a bit penal. Anyway, I enjoyed playing this classic links course!
