Turnberry is expensive. And you might not like the owner. But the golf course is one of the best in the world. Everything feels big at Turnberry. This is a big boys golf course. And everything is manicured to perfection. I was also very impressed how beautiful the place is. There is a public walk to the Turnberry lighthouse. A lot of non-golfers make use of it and enjoy the scenery. On the day we played the front 9 was mostly downwind and were therefore playing a lot easier than the back 9. The first notable hole is the par 3 4th hole. It plays along the sea over a big waste area. The par 5 5th and 7th are both good birdie opportunities with a favourable wind direction. Accuracy is key on the par 3 6th hole. Missing the green can lead to a very tough up and down. When you finished the 8th hole make sure to take the left pathway. You will get to the back tee of one of the most stunning par 3s in the world - the 9th hole at Turnberry with the lighthouse on the left. What a hole! If the Open Championship will ever return to Turnberry this will be a very hard hole for the pros playing 248 yards from the back tees! The 10th and 11th hole are again great golf holes playing along the sea. After that the back 9 turn inland. It's the time when Turnberry shows its teeth. Especially if the holes play into the wind as it did on the day we played. A tough test and true championship golf!
