Deze baan ligt in een ruige omgeving: in het havengebied bij Antwerpen en omgeven door windmolens, electriciteitsmasten, bruggen etc. Als je aankomt is het verwachtingsniveau laag, maar dat wordt onmiddellijk bijgesteld als je een eerste blik werpt op het clubhuis en de oefenfaciliteiten. Het is opmerkelijk hoe weinig golfbanen er in de omgeving van Gent zijn – de keuze is hier aan een topbaan die enigszins elitair is (Martens-Latem) een besloten baantje en dan deze, golfschool Gent. Wat van Palingbeek vooral bijblijft is de wijze waarop de bijzondere locatie als WO I battle ground een plaats heeft gekregen in de baan – diverse memorial sites herinneren eraan, je passeert een ere-begraafplaats en ook in de huisstijl heeft de klaproos een plek gekregen.
