Golf in Morocco

Morocco does not have a very long tradition of being a golf destination. But European golfers have slowly discovered the North African country over the past decades. With its location close to Europe – no more than a 3 hour flight from many European airports – the pleasant all year round climate and 45 golf courses to choose from, ensures Morocco is a golf destination that should not be overlooked.

Golf in Morocco
Golf courses in Morocco are mainly focused on golf tourists. When planning a golf trip to Morocco, you will find the highest concentration of golf courses around Marrakech and Casablanca. Agadir in the south is also home to quite a few nice golf courses. You will also find a few golf courses around Fes and Tangier, but these cities are less suitable for just a golf trip. Combining golf with cultural activities in that case would be advisable. Currently there are 45 golf clubs in Morocco and as Morocco is booming as a golf destination - although still mainly visited by French golfers - new golf courses are built every year. Some notable golf courses that just recently opened are The Michlifen Golf & Country Club, Tazegzout Golf and Golf Teelal. The best golf courses in Morocco are Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort, Assoufid Golf Club and PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika. Maintaining and keeping a golf course in great shape is tough in Morocco, so it's wise to keep checking Leadingcourses.com as golf courses can quickly rise or drop in our rankings. This has to do with the climate - very dry and sunny - and the management of the golf course. The climate of Morocco is similar to that of southern California, with lush forests in the northern and central mountain ranges of the country, giving way to drier conditions and inland deserts further southeast. The Moroccan coastal plains experience remarkably moderate temperatures even in summer, owing to the effect of the cold Canary Current off its Atlantic coast. South of Agadir and east of Jerada near the Algerian borders, arid and desert climate starts to prevail. Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Moroccan economy. Most of the visitors to Morocco are European, with French nationals making up almost 20% of all visitors. Most Europeans visit in April and autumn. Morocco's relatively high number of tourists has been helped by its location—Morocco is close to Europe and it attracts visitors to its beaches. Tourism is focused on Morocco's culture, such as its ancient cities (like Meknes, Fes and Marrakech) but golf is growing slowly but steadily. Agadir is a major coastal resort and accounts for a third of all Moroccan occupied hotel beds. It’s also a base for tours to the Atlas Mountains. Getting to Morocco is quite easy as there are many airports to chose from. The busiest airports in Morocco are Casablanca-Mohammed V, Marrakech and Agadir.

PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika
Ourika is a relatively new course but you don't experience that when you are out playing it. It has a very nice driving range where you hit balls from thick green grass in January(!) On the whole course the contrast between the green fairways and the sand of the bunkers or yellow grass is very nice. Some holes have a similar design with big bunkers/waste areas to cross …

Noria Golf Club Marrakech
One of the most unique golf courses I have played and I have played a few! ;) This one is definitely a must play if you are in Marrakech as this golf course is something else and very unique... I just love the the design of some holes - 8.,9.,17. and 18 are a beauty. Some great risk & reward holes,11th and 13th are very tempting challenge for long hitters... ;) Great mix …

PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika
As the best rated golf course in Marrakech I expected a lot from it... however it just did not meet my expectations. The course itself is in very good playing condition with very nice fairways and great greens which were very fast and very tricky! While the course itself is still a pleasure to play and the layout is very good it did not have that "wow" or "something spec…

Assoufid Golf Club
When you enter the clubhouse you immediately see the nice view on the square fountains and the course. Nice over seeded boundaries between the fairway and the rough also between the tee-boxes and fairway. It results in a great contrast for the eyes and supplies a super playing surface. The clubhouse is great and the terrace a super place to relax before or after your g…
