Killeen Castle Golf Club

Absolutely magnificient golf course and club. Its a Jack Niklaus Signature design course and it shines through. Just for a start it occupies 220 acres (88 hectares) of land and is the largest golf course by area in Ireland. The course is long, so buggy is recommended if you can't walk long distances. Nobody ever shouts "Fore" on this course, because holes are far and apart. Beautiful, spacious design with lots of bunkers and water hazards and lots of rough although fairways are pretty wide. The most interesting feature is that fairway bunkers are ALWAYS in play from any tees - never experienced that so far. All holes are memorable for one reason or the other. The course condition is top class even in the driest weather. Golf clubhouse is classy with perhaps the best locker rooms. Huge putting green, chipping green with a deep bunker - recommended to practise to know whats awaiting.

Leider ist es mittlerweile kaum noch möglich eine frühe Startzeit am Sonntag auf einem Links in Dublin zu bekommen. Wir mussten aus diesem Grund am Abreisetag einen Parklandcourse spielen. Nach vier Runden auf Linksplätzen bei >50km/h Wind und Regen waren wir aber garnicht so traurig, auch wenn es auch hier kräftig blies und auch regnete. Der Platz im amerikanischen Stil ist aber wirklich eine schöne Abwechslung gewesen. Gut designte, breite Spielbahnen mit sehr dünnem Rough und dafür stark ondulierte Grüns und wirklich tiefe Bunker machen Spaß! Die Optik ist so gut wie sie bei einem Inlandskurs nur sein kann und das Greenfee ist natürlich deutlich günstiger als bei den Links. Im Schloss kann man sicher auch nett übernachten!

Killeen Castle Golf Course is one of the courses near Dublin that has hosted team competitions (K Club 2006 Ryder Cup and Dun Laoghaire 2016 Curtis Cup). Killeen Castle hosted the 2011 Solheim Cup. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus Design and represents a modern golfing style. Apart from the dominant and photogenic 12th century castle at the first tee and the last green, the large and shrubby trees are striking at first sight. The first hole on the left side is complicated by "The Shamrock Bunker", where the grass area inside the bunker is shaped like a shamrock. The opening nine has fairly long transitions between holes. The top holes include 12, a par 5, where a wide creek runs diagonally in front of the green. The difficult holes are 16 and 17, which are played over water. The final hole, a par 4 played over a creek up a slight hill, is a treat. If you are average golfers, play from the green tees. Of these, the course measures 6118 yards.

Stunning course, played of the blue tees which was a bit of a mistake because this course is long, very long! But from the first tee to the 18th green it was a joy to play it! Fairway cut to perfection, greens fair and true, really fast with loads of different levels. Did Mr. Jack like bunkers? Oh yes, he did! But overall a gorgeous experience, certainly one of the better courses in Ireland.

Als onderbreking van een aantal linksbanen bij Dublin speelden we op Killeen Castle. Dat is een feestje hoor. Ze etaleren zich als voormalig gastheer van de Solheim-Cup. De fraaie parkbaan ligt er prachtig bij, goed onderhouden, afwisselende holes met niet al te grote hoogteverschillen. onderweg af en toe een mooi uitzicht op het kasteel. Clubhuis en restaurant zijn top. Wij hebben er genoten.
