The Thorpeness Golf Club is a real test of one's golfing skill. With long fairways and the need for a strong, strategic mind, prepare to be tested on every hole of this beautiful course. Hole 1 A short par-4, the 1st needs an accurate tee shot so you can avoid the fairway bunkers. Pay attention to the flag, because the green is large and you'll want to avoid a potential three-putt. Hole 2 The 2nd is a long par-3 with a heavily bunkered green. If you can find a spot between the two front bunkers to land your tee shot, you'll stay out of trouble and have a birdie opportunity. Hole 3 With a tight left dogleg, the 3rd demands an accurate drive with length. The green has a massive right-to-left slope, so know where the flag is before taking a second shot. Hole 4 The 4th is long and straight but not easy. Ranked as the toughest hole on the course, you'll want to avoid the fairway bunker on the right from the tee box. Keep your second shot to the right as bunkers flank the left side of the green. Hole 5 Another long par-4 with a broader fairway, the second shot faces a two-tiered green. If you feel confident, hit driver, because you'll need the shorter second shot. Hole 6 The 6th hole is an uncomplicated but trickier hole due to the elevation changes from the fairway. We recommend you take a driver out of your golf bag and use it off the tee box but make sure you stay out of the trees to the left. Hole 7 A stunning par-3 that requires a tee shot over water to a small green with little room for mistakes. Avoid the bunkers that protect a front right flag position on most days. Hole 8 Another moderate par-4 that looks simple but has layers of fairway and green bunkers to derail your score. Specifically, you'll want to avoid the bunker in the middle of fairway and bunkers that line the left side of the green. Hole 9 One of only two par-5s at Thorpeness, the 9th demands a drive into a left dogleg. Some golfers try to cut the trees on the left for a chance at an eagle, but it is a risky approach. The green slopes from the back to front, so expect short shots into the flag to be a problem. Hole 10 Mid-sized par-3, the 10th's green is surrounded by bunkers to avoid. Most golfers don't take the wind into account on the 10th, causing for some bloated scoring. Hole 11 The 11th is a short par-4 that invites a big drive, but you should acknowledge the strategically placed bunkers that can ruin your shot at birdie. Hole 12 Another par-4 that rests at the 400-yard mark, the 12th asks you for a straight drive that avoids the right side fairway bunker. The second shot is to an elevated green with bunkers in the front to catch your mistake. The green is large, so try to work the ball close to the cup to save par. Hole 13 A longer par-4 awaits you at the 13th hole. You'll need two accurate shots to reach the green as the fairway is narrow and lined with bunkers. The green is bunker-less but is protected by thick rough should you miss the target. Hole 14 A par-5 with a sharp turn to the left as you reach the green, the 14th has the widest fairway at Thorpeness but where you place the ball is everything on this hole. An eagle is available on the 14th, but you'll need a second shot that avoids the bunkers on the sloping green. Hole 15 The 15th has an extreme left dogleg with a patch of rough midway to force the golfer to choose from either a short layup tee shot to a longer and riskier attempt with the driver. The green is front bunkered with a slope to the left. Hole 16 The longest par-3 on the course awaits you at the 16th. Golfers will hit into a large, round green that is undulating, so flag position is essential to note. Hole 17 The risk-reward par-4 17th gives you a chance for an easy birdie if you can stick your second shot from a reasonable distance. Use your golf sunglasses to avoid the sun reflection and accurately gauge the distance. Bunkers protect the green, but a strong tee shot will leave you with a wedge in your hand to attack the flag. Hole 18 The finishing hole at Thorpeness requires a long drive off the tee while avoiding the small bunkers that mark the fairway. The second shot leads into a long, horizontal green that slopes to the right. As always, it pays to avoid the greenside bunkers if you want to finish strong.
