Ilfracombe Golf Club

De volgende golfstop tijdens mijn UK rondreis was Ilfracombe. De baan doet mee aan het golfamore programma, waardoor ik voor £25,- de 18-holes kon lopen. Na het aanmelden in de kleine proshop door naar tee 1. Wat begint met een par 5 heuvelop en een blinde tweede slag. Daarna volgt driemaal een par 3. Bijzonder maar wel elk met een eigen karakter (hole 2 heeft een blinde slag, 3 is erg lang en 4 is extreem kort). Pas op hole 7 kom je de eerste par 4 tegen, maar kruist wel met hole 8 wat een beetje gek, verwarrend en gevaarlijk is. Hole 10 is ook zo'n hole waar je over de green van 9 en fairway 12 moet heenslaan. Gek! Wat wel heel mooi is zijn de prachtige vergezichten vanaf zowat elke hole zeezicht. De eerste negen holes zijn behoorlijk heuvelachtig en wat klimwerk, vanaf de turn ga je weer richting het dal eigenlijk. Wat verder opvalt is de gekke verdeling van de parren 4. De eerste negen heeft er twee, de tweede negen telt 7x een par 4. Maar het meest bijzonder zijn toch hole 16 en 17. De teeboxen van die holes liggen naast elkaar waardoor je eerst op 17 afslaat, dan op hole 16 en die par 3 uitspeelt, om vervolgens verder te lopen naar je gedrivde bal op 17, dit om een klim te voorkomen en het spel te versnellen. Afsluiten met een par 3 vind ik nooit zo leuk, zeker niet als hij 165 meter is met een vlag blind achter een heuvel. De baan lag in prima conditie al waren de greens wat langzaam. Al met al kan ik zeggen dat Ilfracombe best een geval apart is. Prachtige uitzichten op een erg heuvelachtige baan, maar ook een aantal best gek ontworpen holes.

Een schitterende locatie op de bergen tegen de cliffs aan. Veel blinde schoten en faiways die elkaar crossen. De green waren super, erg bounsie moeilijk om bij de vlag te komen, alles moest kort geland worden voor de green, maar dan wel weten waar dat moet?. De mensen zijn er te aardig voor woorden! Een buggy was wel nodig, lekker een diesel buggy anders kom

Je de berg niet op!

En zoals hen eigen slogan luid: see the sea from every tee!

Just a stone's throw north of the iconic golf courses of Saunton and Royal North Devon, you'll find the unique Ilfracombe Golf Club. Right off the bat, the course surprises you: starting with an unpredictable Par 5, followed by a trio of Par 3s, and yet another Par 5. It's not until you reach the 7th hole that you're greeted by a Par 4.

Playing Ilfracombe is like embarking on a roller coaster ride, but for golf. It boasts wild elevation changes, intersecting fairways, and arguably some of the most breathtaking views a golfer could wish for. It's one of the few courses where I'd genuinely recommend renting a buggy to fully enjoy the experience without the exertion of the terrain.

Special attention must be given to the 16th and 17th holes. The 16th, a Par 3, and the 17th, a Par 4, both descend downhill from a shared tee box. Players are encouraged to take both shots in tandem. After wrapping up the 16th, you simply saunter over to the 17th fairway to continue. It's unconventional, it's quirky, and it's unmistakably Ilfracombe.

I was utterly captivated by my round and will undoubtedly revisit if I find myself in the vicinity again.

Played Ilfracombe in the PM after playing Saunton East in the morning. We just went there to have a look and see maybe if we could play 9. But the 9th green of this course is 2 miles from the clubhouse and way up the hill... so the offer of the pro for 2 players and a buggy (you need a buggy!) £ 50 was one we could not refuse...

The first couple of holes are a bit quirky with a blind, up the steep hill, par 5, three par 3's in a row including an ultra short par 3 (68 yards) but from the 5th an onwards the course has some really nice holes. What is amazing at Ilfracombe are the surroundings, literally you can see the sea on every hole. I have been to quite some coastal courses and that is very rare.

Not sure who designed the course, found a site James Braid was involved in the twenties, but anyway he did a hell of a job on that piece of land. The property is so steep at some points it is a miracle he got the job done. Some unique features resulting from the topography is that there are several holes crossing each other (7&8 and 10&12) probably this was the only way to get it in there.

Also quite interesting is the finish; the 16th is a downhill par 3 just next to the tee is the tee for hole 17. So after you have hit your tee shot on 16 you are presumed to hit your tee shot on the 17th par 4 also down but more left and then finish hole 16 and walk to your drive hit at the 17th. Except in official competitions you have to climb the whole twice...

When we got down at the clubhouse we parked the diesel buggy and because everything was closed went back to the hotel, probably the best price quality course of all the 16 I played on this trip, What a view!

Wat een prachtige baan. 18 holes zicht op de zee. Geweldige greens, vriendelijke ontvangst. 1 van de mooiere banen die ik ooit gespeeld heb. Fairways ondanks de droogte erg goed bespeelbaar. Speelden met zijn 2en voor 40 pond. Hadden Voucher van Golffuhrer.
