Ardglass Golf Club

Ardglass is een golfbaan waar de elementen een belangrijk deel uitmaken van de golfbeleving. En daarbij dan het zeer oude clubhuis, voormalig pakhuis uit de 15e eeuw. Gelukkig konden we via Golfamore een korting krijgen want ze hebben (helaas) de prijzen aan de USA standaard aangepast. En ze hebben niet de EU-regeling zoals op Craigdhu. Maar we snappen de policy wel want op H12 kwamen we een groep amerikanen tegen met hun caddies. En hoewel we veel sneller waren was van doorlaten geen sprake. De caddies waren bang voor hun tip, denk ik. enin. De eerste holes van Ardglass zijn zeer bijzonder. Direct aan de kust en met wind een uitdaging. Allereerst over de rotsen heen naar de fairway om dan een hoger gelegen green te bereiken. Ik heb daar al direct een bal in de zee gemept. Maar dat was niet de enige bal die verloren ging. De baan is uitdagend en het is vanaf de Tee soms lastig te zien waarheen en hoever je moet slaan. Een true test. Na de eerste spectaculaire holes kom je op rustiger terrein. Brede fairways op een relatief vlak terrein. Aangezien niet alle greens direct zichtbaar zijn staan er richtingspalen. Maak daarvan gebruik. Het scheelt zoeken. Pas bij Hole 11 gaat het naar beneden richting de kust. En hole 12 is een echte tester. Naast de zee en slaan, over een stukje kustlijn, naar een smalle strook fairway. Voor de coole golfers een leuke oefening. Helaas liepen we daar tegen de Amerikanen aan. Mooie Par3 volgt dan. En op 13 een blinde afslag naar hopenlijk de fairway. De Holes daarna zijn niet zo spectaculair, Vervolgens kom je dan uit op Hole 18, een mooie Par4 naar de green bij het clubhuis. Omdat we net na 20:00 uur binnenkwamen konden we niet meer aanschuiven in het restaurant. Jammer want we hadden het graag uitgeprobeerd. Dat is voor een volgende keer. Conclusie na de ronde: Topbaan!!

Wow! Een absolute wow-baan! Met windkracht 7 a 8 en slagregens toch met een grijns van oor tot oor van de baan stappen...meer hoef je niet te zeggen. Van de eerste tot de laatste hole, pal aan de rotskust of net een paar meter verder...dit is een golfervaring die je mee moet maken.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to play our glass with my wife and my cousin from America. I was astounded. What a fabulous course. Fantastic view from the old clubhouse building and also from all over the course. It's unfortunate enough because of its growing popularity in the past number of years That's a green fees have become exorbitant. But if you do get a chance to play it do yourself a favor. The food and the restaurant after was amazing undertown of our last itself is lovely. I hope to play it again sometime

To get reacquainted with links golf, before playing Royal County Down, we played Ardglass. I can fully recommend everyone to do the same, although I would say that the price of £200 is on the steep side. Ardglass has a couple of amazing links features. You get really close to the sea, as my slice into the Irish Sea on 11 demonstrates. Hole 2 is a par 3 that plays over a gorge. With three club wind blasting in our face that was a really fun challenge. Hole 7 includes the halfway house which in an integral part of the course. Hole 12 is a par 3 that plays straight towards the sea. All these features make Ardglass an incredible links course. They added to the experience with a very friendly staff that gifts you a ball marker and pitch fork at the first tee. The caddies were also excellent and the clubhouse is something really special, dating back to (at least) 1405. There are a couple of lesser features. Foremost being the (almost) complete absence of practice facilities. There is a tiny practice green for putting and one tiny cage for longer shots. Good reason to include a breakfast ball into your round. The maintenance wasn’t the best. Luckily this was explained at the first tee so it didn’t come as an unhappy surprise. Certain teeboxes were damaged in the spring, and three holes holes were redone and were still coming into their own. Very much appreciated that this was told before we headed out. So I’d happily advice anyone to come and enjoy this true links experience. I do believe though that the lack of practice faculties and the level of maintenance would require a lower price tag than £200.

Ardglass Golf Club is a scenic links and clifftop course located on the County Down coastline. The layout combines dramatic cliff-edge holes with more traditional inland links golf. The opening five holes and the coastal stretch from holes 10-12 are particularly memorable, offering spectacular sea views and strong golf architecture. Conditioning is very good, with well-maintained greens, bunkers, and fairways. Some of the inland holes feel less distinctive than the famous coastal stretches and can become slightly repetitive in comparison. Recent routing changes may divide opinion among returning visitors. The historic clubhouse, dating back to 1405, is one of the oldest clubhouse buildings in the world and provides a unique setting alongside modern facilities. Practice facilities are limited near the clubhouse (a putting green), with the main practice area located a 5-minute drive away. Ardglass offers a distinctive and highly enjoyable links experience, combining history, scenery, and several truly outstanding golf holes.
