Golf De Morfontaine

Une expérience unique ! J'ai eu la chance de jouer de très beaux parcours en France, en Europe, dans le Monde, mais lorsque j'ai commencé à jouer au golf voilà 9 ans, je m'étais fixé l'objectif de pouvoir jouer Mortfontaine au moins une fois dans ma vie... c'est chose faite ! Les installations sont sobres à l'image des golfs historiques français (Fontainbleau, les Aisses, Chantilly, Saint-Germain...) mais le joyau c'est vraiment ce Grand Parcours. Le tracé est fabuleux, c'est vraiment un privilège d'avoir pu fouler son fairway. Et pour la petite histoire je l'ai joué des... back tees ! Alors si certains trous sont plutôt longs, des greens bien défendus, sa principale difficulté réside dans... ses roughs ! Si par chance vous retrouviez votre balle, ne soyez pas ambitieux, un wedge sera votre seule chance de retrouver le fairway. Je l'ai joué juste après un épisode caniculaire ce qui a généré des roughs et pré roughs très secs voir brûlés. Mais cette spécificité donne un aspect visuel magnifique de couloir de fairway et qui challenge encore plus la volonté d'y rester dessus. Le jeu des couleurs est fabuleux tout comme la très grande variété de végétation. Le niveau de détail est à son paroxysme avec un soin apporter aux greens de très grande qualité. Réellement unique en France et surement au-delà !

After playing Saint-Cloud and Saint-Germain, we were fortunate to be invited to the incredibly exclusive Golf de Morfontaine, just north of Paris near Senlis. This ultra-private club is normally closed to the general golfing public, but if you ever get the rare opportunity to play here, do not hesitate. It’s an unforgettable experience. Morfontaine features 27 holes: the 9-hole Vallière Course and the 18-hole Grand Parcours (also called the Vallière and the Vallée, designed by Tom Simpson). The Vallière nine might be short on the scorecard, but in my opinion, it’s the best 9-hole course I’ve ever played. Doglegs, elevated greens, smart bunkering, it’s technical, strategic, and absolutely not a pushover. Perfect as a warm-up in the morning. Then there’s lunch, the lamb chops are fantastic, before heading out onto the Grand Parcours, which consistently ranks as continental Europe’s #1 course. Rightly so. Every hole could be a signature hole elsewhere. The routing is masterful, the greens are subtle, the par 3s are breathtaking, and the condition is flawless. It’s not an easy course to par, but true to Simpson’s philosophy, a bogey always feels within reach, and the challenge is incredibly fair. The course whispers rather than shouts, and that quiet confidence is what makes it so compelling. We played all 27 holes and didn’t see a single other golfer. That level of privacy and serenity is almost unheard of. No tee times, no noise, just pure, uninterrupted golf. After the round, the clubhouse welcomes you back with warmth and tradition. The staff treat you like a member for the day. You finish your round at Morfontaine not just wanting to play again, but wishing you never had to leave.

Op de hoogste trede van dat Franse podium, van het hele continent zelfs, staat sinds jaar en dag Golf de Morfontaine. Het zaadje voor dit succes werd in 1913 geplant door Armand de Gramont, die van zijn vader toestemming kreeg om een poloveld om te bouwen tot een 9-holesbaan: Vallière. Kort daarvoor had de hertog, tijdens het kopen van polopaarden in Engeland, Tom Simpson ontmoet en hij liet de Engelsman overkomen om de baan te ontwerpen. Simpson had net de advocatuur ingeruild voor een carrière als golfbaanarchitect, en liet met de negen holes van Vallière direct zien dat dit een goede keus was. De holes liggen rond en over een heuvel gedrapeerd en Simpson laat ze bijna opgaan in het beboste landschap. Het resulteert in onvergetelijke drives en approaches, met als toetje een puttwedstrijd op de uitzinnig golvende greens, waar de bunkers gulzig happen uit nemen. Lijkt golfen op veel moderne banen vooral op kilometers maken op de snelweg, hier zit je negen holes lang in een achtbaan. Spectaculair en onvergetelijk. Vallière mag dan de 'tweede' baan van Morfontaine zijn, op meerdere holes steekt hij zijn grote broer naar de kroon. Dertien jaar later, in 1926, kwam Simpson terug, met een schoudertas vol ervaring dankzij renovaties van onder andere Muirfield, Ballybunion en Cruden Bay. Hij bleek klaar voor zijn meesterwerk: Le Grand Parcours (de grote baan) van Golf de Morfontaine. In die tijd hadden architecten niet de beschikking over grote machines, en het is alsof Simpson de baan zich zelf een weg heeft laten zoeken tussen de bomen en stukken heide. Zelfs de door de gletsjers meegenomen rotsen liet hij liggen, wat bijdraagt aan de tijdloze atmosfeer in het bosrijke heidelandschap. Je speelt langs hellingen met manshoge varens, over schier eindeloze heidevelden en tussen statige bomen die hier al honderden jaren staan. Morfontaine, dat in 1927 opende, is niet lang (al plakte Kyle Phillips er in 2005 een paar honderd meter aan vast), maar zonder de juiste strategie en een flinke portie doorzettingsvermogen blijft een goede score buiten bereik. De baan vraagt om shotmaking, risico's nemen, herstelslagen en creativiteit. Dat betekent overigens niet dat je volledig murw gebeukt het clubhuis bereikt. Integendeel. Elke golfer die zijn bal hier mag opteeën, zit na de ronde met een gelukzalige glimlach om de lippen op het terras. Simpson vond dat een golfbaan plezierig moest zijn voor golfers van elk niveau. Speelbaar voor de hogere handicapper en een uitdaging voor de betere golfer. Dat is hem met Morfontaine op een briljante manier gelukt, wat verklaart waarom er in honderd jaar tijd nauwelijks iets aan de lay-out is veranderd en de baan gezien wordt als de beste van het Europese vasteland. Dat de hekken van Morfontaine alleen opengaan voor leden en hun gasten is misschien jammer voor golfliefhebbers, maar die isolatie is ook de reden dat dit meesterwerk van Simpson hier een eeuw later nog onaangetast in de bossen ligt.

Playing Morfontaine is an incredibly rare opportunity, if you ever get the chance, drop everything, get in your car, and go. For us, our entire trip to Paris was planned around the opportunity to play Morfontaine. That’s not to diminish the other courses we played, but being granted access to Morfontaine is something truly special. We had heard stories that even if you're approved to visit, it's never guaranteed the gate will open. Fortunately, when we arrived, the gate was already open, likely because a group from St George’s (UK) was also visiting that day. For Morfontaine, that meant it was unusually busy; typically, only a handful of golfers are on the course at any given time. Because the St George’s group was playing Le Grand Parcours, we began our day on the Vallière course. Some even say Vallière is the better of the two and we could see why. Both courses, designed by Tom Simpson, are exceptional. Accuracy off the tee is key here, and if you find yourself in the heather, it's often smarter to take your medicine and just get back to the fairway or take a penalty if needed. What stood out most was the absolute peace and pristine beauty of the club. Everything is laid out with generous space, and the design feels intentional and refined. Every hole is visually stunning and of remarkable quality. That said, one small drawback is the sense that you don’t quite belong. I’ve played many private courses, but here, we felt more like tolerated guests than welcomed visitors. That’s not necessarily a complaint, just an observation. At a club with such exclusivity, it’s understandable they want to maintain a certain level of privacy and preserve the experience for their members. Between rounds, we had a lovely lunch on the terrace overlooking the putting green, as well as the 1st and 9th holes of Vallière. The clubhouse itself is not very large, but it carries a certain charm and even boasts what might be the smallest pro shop in the world. If you ever have the opportunity to play Morfontaine, seize it. We drove over six hours to get there, and it was absolutely worth every minute.

Dit is de plek op aarde waar ik volmaakt gelukkig ben. Mijn jaarlijkse bedevaart naar Morfontaine is iets waar ik maanden naar uitkijk. Als je de kans krijgt hier te spelen moet je dat zonder nadenken doen. Begin met de 9 holes Valière baan, prachtig in het bos gelegen, om er in te komen: diabolisch moeilijke greens en veeleisend qua course management.

Daarna lunchen en door naar de Grand Parcours. Meanderend door de bossen speel je de een na de andere fantastische hole. De heide en rotspartijen straffen elk foutje genadeloos af. Vaak liggen de greens hoog waardoor approaches loepzuiver moeten zijn. Geen water, maar meer dan genoeg bunkers to spice up the round. Veel plezier!
