Das Highlight unserer diesjährigen Irland-Tour! Jeder Platz tut sich schwer zu glänzen wenn man vorher Trallee gespielt hat und nach den ersten Löchern ist man, zumindest was die Optik des Platzes betrifft, zugegebernermaßen etwas enttäuscht, auch wenn man schon vorher wusste, dass die zweiten neun der Grund dafür sind, dass dieser Platz unter den Top 20 weltweit gerankt ist. Und tatsächlich sind sie schlicht umwerfend! Wenn man sich das Greenfee leisten kann ohne schlaflose Nächte zu bekommen und Sturm und Regen auf der Runde keine Katastrophe darstellen, sollte man diesen Platz unbedingt spielen!

The Old Course van Ballybunion Golf Club is a great links course in Ierland. You will be welcomed at your arrival and driven with a buggy to the excellent practice facilities on the other side of the road. The first 6 holes are not on the coast and are "normal", but from the 7th hole you will be amazed. The surroundings are beautiful and the course challenging. The last 12 holes are right on the sea and the dunes are really impressive on the 2nd nine. At the end of May the course was not yet in top condition, because there had been little growth. One of my favorite holes is the 17th hole; a dogleg par 4 to the left of 350m (white tee) that runs down from the tee. You hit your drive towards the sea and have a headwind on the right. Full iron 7 to a green that runs left and right. It was great fun on this course!

Ballybunion Golf Club – Magie in den Dünen am frühen Morgen Was für ein Erlebnis: Erster Abschlag um 7:00 Uhr morgens auf einem der legendärsten Linksplätze der Welt – dem Old Course des Ballybunion Golf Club. Die Sonne kroch langsam über die Dünen, die Luft war frisch, das Meer rauschte leise im Hintergrund – und der Platz lag wie gemalt vor uns. Ballybunion ist pure Links-Golf-Kultur: enge Fairways, hügelige Dünen, schnelle Grüns und immer wieder spektakuläre Blicke auf den Atlantik. Jeder Schlag wird hier zur taktischen Entscheidung – und der Wind ist dein ständiger Begleiter. Trotz des frühen Starts war der Platz in top Zustand, und es fühlte sich fast spirituell an, so früh in dieser dramatischen Naturkulisse unterwegs zu sein. Absolute Gänsehaut-Momente garantiert. Ein besonderes Highlight war unser grandioser Forecaddy, der uns nicht nur mit seinem Wissen über den Platz, sondern auch mit viel Charme, Humor und perfekten Tipps durch die Runde begleitet hat. Eine echte Bereicherung für den Flight! 🏌️‍♂️ Drei spannende Fakten zum Ballybunion Golf Club: 1. 🏆 Der Old Course zählt regelmäßig zu den Top 20 Golfplätzen der Welt. 2. 🌊 Er wurde 1893 gegründet und liegt direkt an den hohen Klippen der Atlantikküste in County Kerry. 3. 🇺🇸 Golf-Legende Tom Watson ist ein großer Fan und hat mehrfach betont, dass Ballybunion der „beste Linksplatz der Welt“ sei. Fazit: Ballybunion ist nicht nur ein Golfplatz – es ist eine Erfahrung. Wer um 7 Uhr morgens hier abschlägt, erlebt den Platz von seiner absolut magischsten Seite. Und mit einem großartigen Forecaddy an der Seite wird die Runde endgültig unvergesslich.

Our round was part of The Irish Experience, a trip by The Golf Traveller along 3 great Links courses Tralee Golf Club, Ballybunion Golf Club and Waterville Golf Links and 2 parkland courses Adare Manor and Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. See there for the respective ratings. Ballybunion is highly regarded and regularly appears at the top of various lists. You can already feel it when you arrive, the entrance, the reception, the inviting shop that you are immediately drawn to and all other facilities in the clubhouse. The driving range is not really far from the clubhouse, but nevertheless there is a shuttle buggy service to and from the driving range, where the staff takes into account your tee time and ensures that you appear back at the starter on time. We played the Old Course of Ballybunion on a chilly, but sunny day with a moderate wind that was opposite to the prevailing wind. That made the first part of the round quite long with some already long par-4 and par-5 holes. The more beautiful and scenic part of the course actually starts from hole 8, when you play more in between the dunes and along the ocean. This is also the part to which Ballybunion owes its status and popularity. Understandable, but in my opinion also a bit overrated, if you compare it to less known courses like Tralee and Waterville. On balance, I think they score better in terms of price/value ratio. Ballybunion will undoubtedly play much more difficult in less friendly weather conditions, but even on a beautiful day like this it is a very challenging course. You need a combination of length and precision and how many average amateur golfers have that in their bag? All in all, it's all beautiful and if you manage to keep your game together, there is also enough time and attention left for all the beauty that surrounds you. You can also imagine that this course can show its teeth when conditions are less friendly than what we found today. Then it will also be quite a challenge with handicap 10 to stay under 100 strokes. The attention and care by staff and caddies was all fine. The caddies will find balls that you would never have found yourself. Beautiful tee boxes, tight fairways, great greens and everything very well maintained. Everything breathes golf at a high level. We had an early tee time, so we were back at hole 19 around lunchtime. It was quite busy in the restaurant, but the staff handles it easily. This also brings you to a (small) downside: the massiveness it radiates. Fortunately, the quality of what is offered does not suffer. A delicious lunch is quickly served. Ballybunion crossed off my bucket list. Happy with that, but certainly not happier than with the introduction to courses like Tralee and Waterville.

Quel magnifique links, finalement nous avons joués les deux parcours. Même si le Old est supérieur! Tout est superbe.
