The Gleneagles Hotel

Wat een complex. Het imposante kasteelhotel met het prachtige park er omheen. Zeer indrukwekkend. Maar we kwamen om te golfen. En na een aantal jaren gelden de Centenary baan gespeeld te hebben, wilden we nu de Kings Course spelen. Voor mij de mooiste parkbaan die ik ooit heb gespeeld. Schitterende uitzichten, brede fairways, bunkers waar je uit wilt blijven maar als je daar dan toch in komt, prima uit te spelen en greens met slopes.... Het is 18 holes lang genieten! We boekten na 14:30uur. Dat scheelt een hoop geld want de "grote banen" durven prijzen te vragen! Wij betaalden £ 195,00 wat nog steeds veel geld is maar het was het waard. Nu rest ons toch nog de Queens Course. Ook die moet een keer gespeeld worden.

De Kings Course van Gleneagles heeft een prachtige ligging en het onderhoud van de baan is over het algemeen goed. Toch viel de ervaring als geheel wat tegen. Bij aankomst voelde het ontvangst weinig persoonlijk – het personeel leek overal met eigen dingen bezig, zowel bij de tasontvangst, de receptie als bij de uitgifte van de trolleys. Dat is jammer, want bij een baan met zo’n naam en reputatie verwacht je net wat meer aandacht en gastvrijheid. Voor een trolley betaal je 17,50 euro en drankjes gaan standaard met een hoge servicecharge. De baan zelf was in redelijke goede staat, al waren de greens vrij nat en daardoor niet op hun best. De omgeving blijft zonder twijfel schitterend, maar het geheel voelt meer als een groot resort dan als een echte golfclub met persoonlijke sfeer. De halfway house was daarentegen briljant met bediening en eten. Kortom: een mooie baan op een bijzondere locatie, maar de beleving bleef achter bij de verwachtingen.

The King’s Course at Gleneagles is a standout example of traditional Scottish inland golf. The course blends classic design with stunning Highland scenery. Every hole feels intentional and well-crafted, with elevation changes, natural shaping, and strategic bunkering keeping players fully engaged from start to finish. Conditioning was excellent throughout our round. Fairways were tightly cut, greens were smooth and consistent, and the overall presentation of the course reflected the high standards Gleneagles is known for. Panoramic views across the Ochil Hills and surrounding Perthshire countryside elevate the round, particularly on elevated tees and approach shots. The layout avoids repetition and offers plenty of variety, with no weak holes to speak of. Facilities off the course are equally impressive. The Dormy clubhouse provides a welcoming atmosphere, excellent food, and the level of service expected from a world-class venue.

La entrada a la propiedad impresiona ya que entras rodeado de dos campos y te encuentras una zona ajardinada perteneciente al hotel que bien podría ser otro campo.

La zona de bagdrop está al lado de la casa club/ tienda/ restaurante y serás recibido por un personal muy atento y agradable.

Campo diseño de James Braid situado en un terreno muy ondulado que va a hacer que prácticamente no juegues un hoyo llano.

Aquí vas a tener algunos golpes ciegos, ya sean de salida o segundos golpes a green.

Muchos de estos tiros van a ser a greens elevados y si no haces la distancia te van a rodar de vuelta o a meterse en alguno de los profundos bunkers que hay. Recuperaciones para nada sencillas.

Por otro lado en algunos de los hoyos cuesta abajo va a ser complicado mantener la bola en green por el efecto opuesto, tendiendo esta a rodar hasta el final.

El mantenimiento es de altísimo nivel.

Si espantas mucho hay zonas de helechos y hierbas muy altas donde con gran seguridad vas a perder la bola.

Pese a lo ondulado y sinuoso del campo, este se debe caminar ya que en este recorrido no hay buggies a excepción de razones medicas.

En el tee del hoyo 11 hay una halfway house donde hay que parar de forma obligatoria.

The starter correctly predicted that the par-four, slight dogleg opening hole would be "unreachable in two" on a cool windy day in April.

It also provides a fair warning for the rest of the round that steep fall-offs will be the hallmark of the Queen's.

The most exaggerated of these are on the par-three second on the left and right of a large bowl target rising from the heavily bunkered front.

For me, the Queen's interest rises from the par-five seventh onwards, with each hole presenting memorable challenges.

The seventh is a gentle dogleg to a green at the end of a copse down the right-hand side. Those who are too greedy may find trees or one of the greenside bunkers but bailing out left is even more likely to find sand.

My passion for short par-fours was sated by the eighth, which, downwind from 327 yards, requires only a short pitch to find the putting surface.

However, its bite is on a rapid green that quickly falls away from front to back and swirls.

It is followed by a belting par-four ninth, a ninety-degree dogleg around a high wooded area into a green hidden by a hump with a bunker on the left.

Even those who find the target in regulation face subtle borrows that may rob the player of par.

The 10th is a love-it-or-hate-it, strategic par-four with bunkers down the left. They cut off an approach to a sunken green hidden beyond trees and a mound.

Two consecutive but very different par-threes challenge players on the 13th - a short hole with water on the right, and the 14th - uphill to a two-tiered green with deep bunkers in front and to the left.

But the 15th is where we blew our chances of glory. This curving, ascending par-four lures in the player because it is only 252 yards.

With the wind behind, I went for it but, inevitably, found sand in front of the green. A modicum of sense would have seen me place the tee shot with a mid-iron.

The very tricky par-three 17th is left to right into a green on the side of a hill. Too far to the left are trees and bushes. Meanwhile, anything short will see the ball amble down the steep slope.

I nudged the ball in from the perfect angle and was thrilled with a two.

The 18th is a wonderful final hole, bearing to the left over a bridged chasm with bunkers awaiting errant drives.

The final shot must avoid sand traps on the left for a triumphant finale.

Queen's may be shorter than the King's course but, on a breezy day, it played tough, its huge quick greens demanding a better touch than we had on the day.

Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly worth its high reputation and, despite our poor score, we would love to return.
