Über Oakdale Golf & Country Club
With the club founded in 1926 when a group of Toronto businessmen purchased a farm north of Toronto, Oakdale hired Stanley Thompson to craft the initial nine holes, with the designer adding nine a few years later. Canadian designer Robbie Robinson added the final nine in 1957. Now nearing a century since it opened for member play, Oakdale remains one of Canada’s great golf clubs. Sure, the setting has changed—once located on a dirt road north of the city, Oakdale is now in an urban hub, making it ideal for those living in Toronto. The course, with its three nines, is magnificent, rambling over rolling land, with the picturesque Black Creek running throughout the design. The course is complemented by a full practice facility, allowing members to hone their games, and PGA of Canada Professionals run an active list of golf events throughout the year. Playable and easily walked, Oakdale is one of the great city courses in Canada. Restored in recent years to Thompson’s vision by noted architect Ian Andrew, Oakdale is as vibrant and vital as it was when it first opened.

KnudsonThompsonHomenuikThe Oakdale Golf and Country Club is a private facility that is centrally located in north Toronto along the Black Creek River valley. In 2026 this club will turn 100 years young, so you know you know you are in for plenty of character. The original 18 holes were designed by the legendary Stanley Thompson. After his death, his protégé Robbie Robinson was hired on to add nine more holes that opened in 1957.
Recently Architect Ian Andrew was brought onboard to make this 27-hole layout more cohesive. He redesigned nine holes and then intermixed the layout to make it seem seamless. Several trees have been removed and the bunkering has been restored. Because of these initiatives Oakdale has been honoured to host the RBC Canadian Open in 2023 and 2026.
When I played it, the conditioning was superb, the bunkers were deep and consistent and the rough was cut down and manicured under the trees. Maybe not so for the Canadian Open.
The new layout offers tight, well-defined holes with substantial elevation changes. There are not too many bunkers to content with, but you will be hard pressed to find a flat lie.
There are a number of signature holes here, but the Knudson 9th hole will be the finishing hole for the Canadian Open that will more than likely decide the eventual tournament winner. This is normally a par-5 for members but has been converted to a par-4 for the pros. At 500 yards, they have two options. Drive it to a narrow opening between a bunker and water hazard or lay it up and be left with a long uphill second. Either way you are faced with an enormous sloping uphill green.
This course may not be long by today's standards, but it will definitely test every club in the bag for the pros.

9 LöcherThe longest of Oakdale’s three nines, the Homenuik nine, named after the club’s long-time Teaching Professional Wilf Homenuik, asks players to hit golf shots off the tee in order to score well. Armed with a variety of tee options, this nine is still ideal for players of all abilities.
Thompson
9 LöcherBy placing a premium on shot making, Oakdale’s Thompson nine is sporty and brilliant. Running over some of the best parts of the property, length isn’t the distinguishing factor of this nine; rather, the natural topography defines many of the course’s best holes.
Knudson
9 LöcherDesigned by Robbie Robinson, this nine is named after Canadian great George Knudson, who played out of Oakdale for many years. Built on a rolling piece of property, it was recently renovated by Ian Andrew to offer a cohesive look in tune with the other 18.
