Lahinch Golf Club

Helaas. Lahinch Golf heeft twee banen: de Old Course, de mooiste en uitdagendstevkunnen wij als modale golfers niet spelen. Het is vreemd; heeft men door dat wij ‘anders’ zijn? Wanneer we het restaurant van zowel de Old Course als de Castle Course binnen gaan, worden we niet aangekeken of toegesproken. Heel vreemd, want de afgelopen weken, tijdens onze golftour langs standaard- en 9-holes golfbanen, was het welkom van caddymaster tot barman of -vrouw werkelijk allerhartelijkst. We lopen dan ook wat verloren langs de 1st tee, waar groepen Amerikanen met nota bene forecaddies klaarstaan om te starten. Tja, 4 x €450 en €100 voor een caddy is €2200 en blijkbaar interessanter dan … De Old Course: het is wel een geweldige golfbaan in een geweldig duin- en linkslandschap. In de top 10 van Ierland. Het doet pijn. Het enige wat we waarderen, is dat de website van Lahinch vermeldt: ‘The Old Course & Castle Course are both walking courses and golf carts/buggies are not available for hire.’ Dus gaan wij lekker spelen en lopen op de Castle Course (€60 GF). De Castle-baan is een korte par 69 voor de heren en par 71 voor de dames. Niet moeilijk, maar lekker speelbaar met net geen 5000 meter voor de heren en 4500 meter voor de dames. En een slope rating van 111 en 125. Vanaf de tee van hole 1 ziet het er bedreigend uit; de fairway lijkt heel erg smal, maar dit komt door de maaitechniek in twee richtingen. Een kant van de fairway is helder groen en de andere kant is donker groen. Gaaf gedaan door de greenkeepers. Hole 2 en 3 zijn twee par-3’s en, net als de andere par-3’s, goed ontworpen en best pittige holes. De voorgreens en greens zijn van geweldige kwaliteit: mooi kort en onbeschadigd. Op de Castle wordt heel professioneel werk geleverd. Hole 4, een par-5, is een prima hole: een dogleg, gave bunkers in een rij aan de rechterkant en mooi wuivende rough. De rough is niet alleen mooi voor het oog, maar ook dun genoeg om een bal nog uit te kunnen slaan. Hole 7 is een prachtige hole: een korte par-3 van 105 meter voor zowel heren als dames, met een machtig uitzicht op de inlet en de eeuwenoude restanten van een uitkijktoren. De eerste negen hebben vier par-3’s. Maar door het uitstekende design verveel je je geen moment. Hole 8 schatten wij in als de signature hole. Wat een prachtige hole! Een korte par-4 van net 250 meter, maar met een uitzicht en een indrukwekkend gevoel voor wel 750 meter. Vanaf een hoge tee kijk je uit over een fraai weglopende dogleg waarbij over een groot deel van de bocht een kreek meeloopt. Keuzestress: driver dwars over de bocht en de kreek, met het gevaar dat je drive door de fairway heen vliegt, of toch een lange ijzer naar de hoek? Links zie je de green liggen. Wat een prachtige hole. De tweede negen zijn wat eenvoudiger. Zoals vaker liggen de holes naast elkaar en gaan ze op en neer, vrij rechttoe rechtaan. De greens op de Castle-holes zijn vrij makkelijk, maar wel van uitzonderlijk goede kwaliteit. De Castle Course en de ranking: €450 + €100 = €550 tegenover €60! Het is niet zo dat wij de Castle negen keer gaan spelen, maar één keer spelen en wij zijn dik tevreden.

If, in preparation for your visit to Lahinch Golf Club, you have read everything about this 134-year-old club, its history, and its current status as Ireland's No. 1, and have also played the course several times on the golf simulator, you might think you know what to expect. Wrong! It is much more beautiful and impressive than that. Lahinch has everything that makes links golf so beautiful. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean offers stunning views of the sea, the estuary, and inland towards the village of Lahinch at various points. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens that are beautifully and seemingly laid out in a completely natural manner among the dunes. Elevation changes that you do not experience on a simulator, giving the course fantastic dynamics. The first 12 holes, in particular, are very varied. After that, it becomes slightly flatter and more monotonous, but never boring for a moment. Highlight for me is the stretch of the par-4 third hole, the signature par-5 fourth hole, and the par-3 fifth. The third hole starts with a more or less blind uphill drive, followed by a second shot towards the ocean where the beautifully placed green awaits your ball. Very challenging, but at the same time very scenic. The fourth hole is known as the “Klondyke” and is interrupted at about 165 meters from the green by a high dune that you must overcome with your second shot after a good a good drive to then be able to approach the green in regulation with a wedge. That second shot is a blind shot, where the direction of play is indicated by a marker stone on top of the dune. Permission to make that shot is given by a caddie standing on top of the dune who exchanges a red flag for a green one when play is safe. (See picture) The fifth hole, a par-3 of about 135 meters, is also a unique design. The green is completely hidden behind and between the dunes, so you have to find it with a blind shot. The pin position is once again marked by a white stone on top of the dune in front of the green. All in all, it is treacherous, because you need a higher carry than you would expect based on the distance. One or two extra clubs is quite normal here. But the reward when the ball finally lands neatly on the green behind the dune is indescribably rewarding. It was still early in the season, but despite that, the course was already in excellent condition. And I could go on like this for a while, but it is better to find an opportunity to go and definitely do not pass it up! Lahinch is a feast for the eyes and offers links golf at its best. Do hire a caddie though, as that absolutely contributes to the enjoyment of playing this heavenly course. Unfortunately, the clubhouse was undergoing renovation during our visit, so we were unable to enjoy hole 19. The well-stocked shop was open however, and its offerings proofed very attractive to credit cards. We made a remarkable discovery when upon our walk to the course, we passed a small alleyway where we found a very old (1892) gate at the end, which turned out to be the old entrance to the course. Talking about preserving tradition… See the attached photo. I hope to be able to return to Lahinch someday.

Wat een geweldige baan om te spelen, wel een flinke wandeling. Kwaliteit van de baan is top, variatie enorm. Echt een genot om hier te spelen

Lahinch Golf Club, located on the west coast of Ireland in County Clare, is widely regarded as one of the country’s finest links courses. Established in 1892, it boasts a rich history and is often referred to as the "St. Andrews of Ireland. " The course’s natural dunes, unpredictable winds, and coastal setting provide a classic links experience that many golfers find challenging yet rewarding.

The original design of Lahinch Golf Club was laid out by the legendary Old Tom Morris in 1894. Morris, a pioneer of golf course architecture and a four-time winner of The Open Championship, incorporated many of the natural features of the landscape into the layout, which still influences the course today. His signature holes, like the famous "Klondyke" and "Dell" holes, are known for their quirky, blind shots and are cherished as part of Lahinch's charm.

At 325€ not really cheap and since first players are requested to take a caddie (which is actually a great idea) which adds another 100€ it is maybe not the course for everyone... but if you can and want to afford it... you will not regret it.

A windless golden hour round of Lahinch, this was one of the best golf experiences I’ve ever had.

Play was delayed by thunderstorms, so I started an hour later than scheduled. Luckily the Guinness and the view in the clubhouse is quite alright. Soon enough the weather cleared up and I got paired with a group of Irish lads that were good craic.

Unlucky for me, a good bunch of caddies had decided to go home during the storm. This was resolved by handing me an electronic trolley. But still too bad. You want to play with a caddy here as you’ll face many a unique hole!

Because uniques holes this course has a plenty! Especially the first nine is spectaculair. Holes 3,6 and 7 see you play towards a green that seems to hang over the Atlantic. Breathtaking! Holes 4 and 5 are unlike any you’d ever find anywhere else, as you have to play a blind shot towards the green.

But the second nine also didn’t disappoint. I figure hole 11 to be their most picturesque, with hole 12 being a beauty for its Irish landscape. Holes 10,14 and 15 are real challenges, and a true test of links golf.

The sun came out, and golden hour gave the course the lighting this course deserves. As if walking through a painting. Lahinch Golf Club deserves every bit the high praise it receives.
