Tandridge Golf Club
Over Tandridge Golf Club
Celebrated golf architect Harry Colt created the delightful course at Tandridge in 1924. There are spectacular views of the Surrey North Downs and the High Weald, with the front nine running along relatively gentle land and the back nine sited in more rolling and dramatic terrain. Harry Colt is the true father of golf course architecture. His knowledge of the game, his vision and love of the land allowed him to create courses of great distinction that have stood the test of time as well as any in the world.

Tandridge: Where Tradition Has a Handicap Index” There are golf clubs… and then there’s Tandridge. A Surrey sanctuary where the fairways are striped, the puddings are revered, and the collective mood oscillates gently between deeply proud and mildly disapproving. You don’t join Tandridge — you emerge into it, like a character in a Merchant Ivory film. One minute you’re playing nomadic golf with a plastic bag of tees and a 20-year-old trolley, the next you’re being inducted by a man in a tie who knows exactly what your father did in 1976. The course itself is a quietly majestic rollercoaster of elevated tees, sweeping doglegs and the kind of bunkers that whisper, “You shouldn’t have gone for it, should you?” Designed by Harry Colt (yes, that Colt — the Beyoncé of pre-war course architecture), it has a certain rumpled grandeur, like a duke’s drawing room after a decent party. But Tandridge isn’t just about golf. No, no. It’s about being. Being early for your tee time. Being quietly furious about bunker consistency. Being 84 and still doing calf stretches outside the pro shop because you once read Gary Player does it. It’s also about rituals. The Sunday carvery is the stuff of legend — part meal, part medieval theatre. Yorkshire puddings the size of soft furnishings, roast beef carved with surgical precision, and a dessert table that could derail an elite triathlete. Members who haven’t broken 90 in three years still claim to have gone round in 77, but they’ll never lie about how many helpings of sticky toffee they had. Of course, like all grand clubs, Tandridge is a contradiction wrapped in tweed. It talks of attracting younger members, then winces at anyone wearing a hoodie. It boasts a progressive strategy, but still refers to the boardroom as “the committee room” as if Churchill might pop in for tea. But beneath the tradition, there’s a quiet evolution. The course is being shaped for the future. The clubhouse has Wi-Fi and red wine under £40. The staff are friendly. The members are, by and large, only marginally terrifying. And somewhere between the honours boards and the 10th tee, you realise — this place works. Tandridge may not shout. It may not Instagram. But it endures. With grace, with pudding, and with just enough side-eye to keep you off your phone in the spike bar.

Tandridge deserves to emerge from the shadows of its more trumpeted Surrey neighbours.
The final six holes are among the most exhilarating I've played on an inland course and that isn't to say its others are bad or unmemorable, far from it.
It is easy to see that Tandridge's leadership has a 'vision' - it is the first heading on its impressive club website.
The listed promises reflect a commitment to its members and the club's future. In return, they are being asked to support a radical programme of change.
The alterations to the course, originally designed by master architect Harry Colt, are most interesting to us as visitors.
Colt's day had 200 bunkers, and the trees were low, so the clubhouse could be seen from most of the course.
However, trees and bushes grew, and Tandridge became known for its tight fairways and scary avenues.
Now, while keeping the philosophy of Colt in mind, extensive work is being is taking place to update the course and improve playability.
As with any renovation, this has caused healthy debate, but not having seen the track previously, I found the variety of the holes impressive and the conditioning admirable.
This is particularly true of the pristine tee boxes, speedy and subtle greens, devilish run-offs and consistently good fairway turf.
Its highlights are 13th and 14th
The 13th - a glorious 223-yard downhill par-three that, according to the website description, "The Club Professional regards as a test of nerves. "
Sand traps down the right push thoughts to an approach from the left, but a cunningly placed bunker will punish those flying too low into the green.
The view from the 14th tee will live even longer in the memory as the player is confronted by a steep drop to a fairway cut between a wood on the right and more trees on the left.
The ball floated for an age before finding a downhill lie on the fairway that then rises past a stream and a trio of bunkers to a very tricky raised green.
Tandridge is a club that seeks to advance in the rankings. I would not be surprised if it achieves that goal.
