Royal Blackheath Golf Club

Walk onto the first tee and enjoy the view! One can see the vast majority of hole stretched out across the ground that slopes away from the historic clubhouse. A nice easy drive downhill on the first only a mere 10 pases from the clubhouse. However, this same height difference must be negotiated back up on the 18th to a green sitting right next to the tee and very close to the terrace besided the clubhouse. After a well positioned tee shot one should be left with a relatively short, but daunting shot across a hedge towards the clubhouse. The rest of the course is taking you around the property with holes in varying directions. Some inviting you to maximise distance whereas other require precision. The course was in excellent condition and a pleasure to play.

Royal Blackheath golfbaan sinds 1608! en "a private members golf club with the warmest welcome to our vistors". Dit samen met de monumentale inrijpoort schept uiteraard hoge verwachtingen die niet helemaal werden ingelost. Je moet door stadje Eltham rijden en opeens na nog een bocht sta je voor de poort van deze golfclub. Waarschijnlijk was in 1608 hier nog niets, maar nu is deze golfbaan volledig omringd door huizen en urbanisatie / trein enz. Vriendelijke ontvangst en de kleine Proshop die een beetje achteraan is verstopt (vlak bij hole 1 en de 2 afslagplaatsen (dit blijft toch typisch engels hé). Dus helemaal geen uitgebreide oefenfaciliteiten (een oefengreentje voor het gebouw en 2 afslagplaatsen en that's it!). Het prachtige zicht vanaf teebox hole 1 geeft je een mooie indruk van de golfbaan. Je hebt de keuze tussen Purple / Gold / Blue en Composite afslagplaatsen. Het is een zeer open, ruime baan met vrij snelle greens. Door het ontbreken van echte 'rough' ben ik eindelijk nog eens een Engelse baan door gegaan zonder balverlies. Onderweg waren er verschillende leden/vrijwilligers bezig met de baan te onderhouden (samen met greenkeepers) en werd ik voorgesteld aan één van de original members (Britse humor). Als je onderweg naar London hier zou stoppen voor een rondje golf ontdek je een stuk Britse golfgeschiedenis. Ik heb wintertarief betaald van 75£ en dat is een correcte prijs voor een brok traditie. Meer zou ik hier niet voor willen uitgeven.

Not quite sure if I think this is a terrific club with a rich history just a few miles from central London or a slightly tired-looking place living on its past reputation with a lot to improve in the modern era. Perhaps there's bit of truth in both views. The course is nice enough and the clubhouse is a real architectural gem. Green fees are quite pricey, though, and I just hope the club's future will be as impressive as its past.
