St George's Hill Golf Club

Another gem in Surrey is St George's Hill Golf Club. It is located in a gated community with luxurious Victorian houses. The most striking difference between St George's Hill and the heathland layouts in Surrey is the terrain. The course winds and undulates like a roller coaster, and architect Harry Colt (again) made excellent use of these dramatic elevation changes in his design. There are three nines in total: Red, Blue, and Green. The best combination is Red and Blue, which is also ranked among the elite group of the world's top 100 courses according to several sources. From the opening drive, you can only see the hole you are currently playing. The already superbly shaped and positioned bunkers have another unique feature. Their upper edges are often overgrown with heather. Visually stunning. After your game, be sure to stop by the dark red historic brick clubhouse, which is located above the opening tees.

When driving up to St Georges Hill, you enter a heavily guarded and gated community. The drive up to the iconic and amazing clubhouse sets the tone for the day. You pass impressive houses or should I say mansions and you can see several holes just waiting to be played. The parking is large and the walk up to the clubhouse and pro shop just makes you want to tee off. We played with a nice member and I must say it was good to have him with us. Members can always point out where not to miss a fairway or green, which is nice. The first hole - I believe we played red first - is quite a nice hole to start with. The hole runs uphill and you have to cross the road you just passed. The hole is not very difficult, but visually very appealing. And basically that says it all for the rest of the round. Each hole is a little treat and each hole is secluded. I always like to think back of a course and if I can remember at least 4-5 holes then it must be a very good golf course. On the red course, hole 1, hole 5, hole 8 (signature par 3) and hole 9 are really good. The par 3's here are lovely here and the story the member told about hole 8 was very interesting. On a tree you can still see the remains of something that warned military/RAF staff for air attacks. Hole 9 is a great hole that plays back to the iconic clubhouse. You can see some fairly high chimneys on the roof which look out of place, but in the past the roof was thatched. They never bothered to build this back, although we heard there are rumours to make some dormy rooms there. The halfway house has some lovely sausage rolls to help you conquer the next (blue) holes, be sure to order them! The blue course did not disappoint as well. I especially liked hole 11, hole 12 (an uphill par three where you don't want to be right of the flag), hole 15 and hole 17. This does not mean the other holes were not nice, but these were really good. When we were here, they were cutting a lot of bushes under the trees lining the fairways. Even the member was quite surprised, but it provides some nice see-throughs and really makes the course better (in my opinion). A course can become a bit too overgrown and they are tackling this very well. Do I have some things that could be improved? We played here in March, so the course was just out of hibernation. The greens were just aerated and they were a bit bumpy and did not always keep their line. We played other courses which were also in maintenance mode, but those greens were much better. When talking to other golfers in the area they also indicated that greens (and maintenance) can be a bit 'rough' at St Georges Hill. Also, the little lake on the 14th hole of the blue course is a bit out of place. I would replace this with heather. But all in all this is one of the best courses I played. The course is visually very pretty, the Colt layout is really good, the staff is great and the clubhouse is amazing. The clubhouse is iconic - everyone will remember it - and inside it has a lot of personality (names on the pillars) and history. I will definitely return (if possible) and also play the green course. When the heather is blooming, this place must be amazing.

If you are looking for the perfect topography and landscape for a golf course, then St George's Hill is probably one of the best places. Designed in 1913 and with one of the most iconic clubhouses I have seen. Most of the tee shots are elevated and very inviting to hit driver, the green complexes are challenging but doable. The greens are typical for Colt, they seem quite flat, but there are a lot of hidden slopes so you have to bring your A game on the putting services. The par 5s are majestic, and as usual with Colt, the par 3s are on the most beautiful pieces of the property. The start of the Red and the Blue is situated in front of the majestic clubhouse, and there is also a halfway house that sells a great sausage roll. This is typically a top 100 of the world course that totally delivers!

St George Hill (1913) in het upper class Weybridge is in alle opzichten een topbaan. Via gesloten poort met bewaking rij je deze community binnen tussen fabelachtige Engelse mansions. Deze heidebaan uit 1913 (design Harry Colt) is één van de beste golfbanen in Surrey, alles is hier Premier League. Men zegt zelfs één van de beste inlandcourses in Engeland. Het was dan ook een plaatsje zoeken op de parking. Na aanmelden in de kleine proshop (bij vooraf boeken direct te betalen) werd ik via de vriendelijke marshall gestuurd naar hole 1 van de green course. Deze 9 holes Green course is iets korter maar nog steeds perfect afgewerkt met uiteraard veel heide, mooie, ruwe bunkers en harde, snelle greens. De greenfee bedraagt 255£ voor de 18 holes (lussen Red & Blue) en slechts 60£ voor 9 holes Green. De lussen Blue en Red waren zeer druk bezet. Nadien lekker gegeten in clubhouse met prachtig uitzicht op hole 1 en 9 en vele golf memorabilia. Het was een absolute topervaring en de kennismaking met deze topclub via de Green course is meer dan de moeite waard.

Deze baan zou het hoogtepunt van de vakantie moeten worden (in ieder geval de duurste: 315! pond voor 27 holes). De entree is overweldigend: Amerikaanse en Mediterrane resorts kunnen hier een puntje aan zuigen, alhoewel de prachtige oude villa's nu wel hinderlijk worden geflankeerd door moderne blokkendozen, jammer. Om een lang verhaal wat korter te maken volgen puntsgewijs wat zaken die mij op dit prachtige complex opvielen:

Pro's

- De service is hier ongekend. Overal wordt je met een welgemeende lach ontvangen. Toen bij thuiskomst bleek dat een als garantie voor betaling van de barrekening afgegeven kentekenbewijs niet was teruggegeven, heeft de bardame Crystal in twee pogingen op haar vrije dag de kaart op onze volgende baan, Westhill, afgegeven, chapeau!

- De baan is werkelijk een plaatje op grote schaal. Qua presentatie deed hij me denken aan Monte Rei waar elke hole een afgescheiden theater met een spektakel voor het oog vormt. Totaal anders ook dan Swinley Forest dat meer een ingetogen charmante stijl heeft met ook meer zicht op andere holes.

Het clubhuis is van buiten kasteelachtige en van binnen een waar museum: van de scheepsbel van de H.M.S. Nelson tot pilaren met allerlei namen, je kijkt je ogen uit.

Contra's

- Het onderhoud was niet op alle punten top. De greens vertoonden nog behoorlijke verticuteergaten. Geen probleem zolang zij met zand gevuld zijn, maar dat was hier niet het geval waardoor het putten wel beïnvloed werd. Veel goedkopere banen hadden aanzienlijk betere greens, ook na onderhoud.

- De baan wordt doorkruist door een behoorlijk aantal resortwegen. Dit leidde enkele keren tot gevaarlijke situaties doordat er plotseling auto's om de hoek verschenen. Veel goedkopere banen hebben oplossingen om deze gevaarlijke situaties te voorkomen. Ook waren sommige tees dicht achter de vorige green gesitueerd, wat comfortabel is maar bij een drukke baanbezetting tot gevaarlijke situaties kan leiden.

- De green course kost 75 pond voor 9 holes en dat vind ik te veel voor deze weliswaar aangenaam spelende maar niet heel bijzondere baan. Voordeel is wel dat daar niemand komt, zodat je daar in alle rust kunt spelen.

- Men probeert 2- en 4-ballen te scheiden, maar na 9 holes stuitten de eerste 2-ballen op de laatste 4-ballen, waardoor toch weer alle snelheid eruit ging.

Alhoewel er dus wat kritiek mogelijk is (bij die prijs mag je kritisch zijn), hadden we toch een geweldige dag hier. Bij vertrek blijken de leden ook hier gewone (onverantwoordelijke) mensen te zijn. Een stomdronken lid valt voor mijn ogen een zwaar bloedend gat in zijn hoofd op de parkeerplaats en gewoon praten is er absoluut niet bij, maar 10 minuten later zit hij toch weer achter het stuur en rijdt hij de parkeerplaats af, ongelofelijk, maar een (on?)waardige afsluiting van een bijzondere dag!
