Crowborough Beacon Golf Club

An excellent, somewhat hilly, heathland course with a great history and a great variety of holes to challenge any golfer. on a clear day, the views are superb, including from the south-facing raised terrace having a pint.

There are long carries over heather or ravines on a few holes and some fairways are tightened by heather, trees or vegetation alongside.

The golf course plays harder than its slope index.

Its flame may have burned bright for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee but Crowborough Beacon’s golf course remains one of the best-kept secrets among England’s top 100.

And yet it should be trumpeted– because it has stunning holes and some of the best views of any inland course in the country.

We were pleasantly surprised that we could secure a Saturday morning tee time on such a beautiful September day but were told half the members were away supporting their team at a prestigious county event.

After a pleasant chat in the pro’s shop and quick practice on the putting green, it was off to the first tee and the panorama across the Sussex Downs.

We were warned that there were only a couple of flat holes at Crowborough Beacon and the opener sets the trend – a downhill curving par-four. An accurate tee shot will leave a short iron approach but heather awaits those who leak drives to the left.

Across the road, the second is a belter. From the elevated tee, it bends to the right with a chasm covering the front and right entrances to the target.

Already our stamina and our knees were being tested by the dramatic undulations but there are also subtleties – notably on Crowborough Beacon’s greens where even the shortest putt needs to be paid respect.

After a pleasing first nine, I had high hopes of a stellar round but even though it slipped through my fingers, that will not prevent this day from living in my memory.

At £65 with an England Golf county card, it was excellent value and certainly worth discovery.

A 125 year old hilly parkland/forest course. Small parking infront of the clubhouse for members, for visitors behind the clubhouse.

Magnifiecent views of the 1st and 18th. Beautiful scenery and one become eager to play. A putting green, proshop and a warmup net is there as well.

1st,2nd and 4th are downhill holes with amazing views. 3rd a tiny uphill par three,5th a very steep uphill hole and there after a bit less hilly holes until the last two holes which are all uphill.

The surface was firm all over the course which makes it really fun to play. Greens absolute perfect likewise the bunkers.

I had never heard of this course before but I'm glad we played it.

Unfit people should get a buggy the rest of us should walk and enjoy the scenery.
