Over Langland Bay Golf Club

Langland Bay is just one of several attractive courses in and around the Gower Peninsula that have a distinctive appeal to visitors. In Langland's case, the distinction stems from its magnificent views, the fact that it is so well kept and that it looks willing to be kind to the holiday golfer. But just as short people tend to have a feisty nature, short golf courses can also be very belligerent and Langland has a tradition of making you fight for every yard. Small greens, plenty of bunkers and unwelcoming rough combine to ensure that you will have more to keep an eye on than the scenery. The finishing holes are particularly difficult, starting with the short 16th which is called "Death or Glory" because the alternative to hitting the tiny green is to be buried in bracken or playing the second from the beach. Even more fearsome, however, is the par four sixth which is uphill into the wind and is credited with being the toughest in the area. Then again, you have the pleasure of the eighth which runs along the side of Caswell Bay. After Langland youll feel well tested but enjoyably so.

The clubhouse of langland bay has the atmosphere of an old-fashioned seaside, as if it has preserved something of the elegance of the coastal retreat of a century ago. With views to match. The reception is perfect, the best hotels would envy a reception like this. The caddymaster is even a skilled barista. But the club is in no way snobby; all members we met were really friendly. We were granted the teetime of the flight in front of us: two gentlemen with a joint age of 190. Not much later we came across a flight of four with a joint age of 48 – which shows this broad age span of this club. Playing Langland Bay is a sheer delight. It offers magnificent views of the Langland Bay and Caswell Bay. Langland Bay is not a true links course, but rather a clifftop parkland course with a strong coastal character. That means that the wind can play an important role. But it is arguably easier than a links course, and offers for many a more rewarding experience. The layout has a few cross-overs, but on the whole the course is beautifully composed. It starts fairly gently, the coastal view become more impresssive as the round goes on, and the inland section gives you a short break before the strongest finish with some of the most beautiful holes of South Wales. Langland Bay would be on top of my list of recommended Welsh courses.

Day 4, course 5 of my Wales golf experience. I was so much looking forward to his place, cause some people also call it Pebble beach of Wales, not sure why cause it does not need any comparison with US place, its beautiful on its own and the location and the set up is really nice. Small clubhouse with adjacent parking lot, is not far from nice bay area where where you can dip during hot summer. We arrived early morning had quick chat with manager and Caddiemaster, received some hints for course and prepared for the game on putting and chipping green Those who need it warm up can hit few balls into the net. Course lays on nice plates above the Langland bay, however you need to play first 5 holes to get there. First hole is not very attractive but its good hole to warm up with wide fairway. Next holes will lead you behind the clubhouse, and slowly will bring you up on the plateau to have nice view on bay area. I very much enjoyed stretch of the holes 7,8,9. Holes on plateau are quite open and very much influenced by wind. When holes 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 are quite hidden and protected by trees. Last 4 holes giving you again nice view on the sea. The signature hole obviously is par 3 hole 16th where you overlooking clubhouse, sea and beach from elevated tee on the cliff. Those who enjoy elevated tees they need to wait till 17th and smack that small white thing down to 17th green. Finishing on 18th where I would say again that the best parts of this course are behind us. Anyway course was in great shape despite dry summer and it was the so far best experience. We really enjoy it and hospitality there and suggest to visit, and want to for sure come back, but now it’s time for afternoon session.

An undulating course that hugs the coastline around the southern Gower. Not very linksy given its location plenty of tree hazards. There are a couple of holes where the fairways crossover which could cause a potential problem on a busy day. There is also a footpath through the course though it is not well trafficked. We played on a warm summer Sunday and the course was not busy at all. Greens were not as quick as anticipated with all the dry weather however they were well maintained. Some of the tee boxes were a bit rough. Hole 16 is quite a challenge a short par 3 with a steep drop to the left hand side of the green aptly called Death or Glory. Equally Hole 17 a par 4 with an elevated tee that must be 150ft up and you feel like you could put it on the beach in Langland. A lot of interesting holes with some narrow drives or dog legs which challenge club selection. With gorse etc around there is the potential to lose balls. There are golf nets, putting green and a practice ground. The clubhouse is excellent with a well appointed outdoor terrace and a good selection of food and drink. Small pro shop and a large car park.
