Humewood Golf Club

Humewood, which dates from 1931, was the last stop of our 8 course ZA trip this year, and I was expecting great things given it's position in the rankings, and the fact the South African Amateur was being played the week after our trip. First impressions were good - we were warmly welcomed in the Pro shop and in the upstairs bar/lounge area. The course was very busy, so we were allocated a start from the 10th tee - a strong par 4 into the wind to start things off. Other strong holes on the back 9 are the uphill long par 4 13th, the course's signature hole and the reachable par 5 15th - into a narrow green protected on both sides. On the front 9, the long par 3 3rd and tough par 4 8th are the standouts. Humewood is, like seaside courses everywhere, a course where wind strength and direction makes an enormous difference to how the course plays - there was a 3 club wind when we played, and I suspect there are only a handful of still days each year! Humewood bills itself as "the only true links in Africa" - spoiler, it isn't a links course, at least not as those from the UK would recognise. The greens and surrounds are lush and the ball doesn't release. Yes, the fairways are sandy, but the turf isn't firm. In fact, there were large areas of loose sand with almost no grass. Balls land softly in these areas, unlike on true links. Given the ZA Amateur was due to be played the week after, I was pretty disappointed with the course conditioning. I would describe it as scruffy. So, a slight disappointment, principally due to the conditioning, which I acknowledge is transient. I look forward to visiting again hopefully when things have improved.

Toch in of in de nabijheid van Port Elisabeth, dan is de linkbaan Humewood aan de rand van PE, bij Summerstrand op ca. 6 km van het centrum, een must. Een prachtige baan nabij de kust waar de wind parten speelt. Een gevarieerde baan met brede fairways en prima, snelle greens, meer dan 90 jaar oud en gesitueerd in het duinengebied aan de kust. Hierdoor ook fraaie hoogteverschillen en rijk aan natuur. Het clubhuis is sterk gedateerd maar ademt historie, het personeel is uiterst gastvriendelijk. Lopend goed te doen als het niet te heet is want schaduw ontbreekt.

Humewood GC is a nice links course located Just south of Port Elisabeth close to the Indian Oceanië. When playing in the morning the wind is normally less heavy. But is an important factor when playing inthe afternoon. When temp above 25

golfcart may be better. Maintenance is fine and greens a good speed. Staff very friendly also in the restaurant. Clubhouse topical scotch style and could have attention. Overall not expensive for a links course round.

Als je dan toch in Port Elizabeth bent en wilt golfen, ga dan naar Humewood. Leuke links baan. Makkelijk een tee time verkregen door een mail te sturen. Enorm aardige pro’s. Kregen zelfs korting (dan zijn ze altijd aardig natuurlijk) omdat we in het nabij gelegen Radisson hotel verbleven. Gespeeld met een trolley omdat we liever lopen. Het was echter warm en voor ons speelde een 4 bal, waardoor we toch 4,5 uur onderweg waren. Fairways waren kei hard met veel kale plekken. Bij de ochtend wedstrijd van de club was aangegeven dat je mocht plaatsen binnen een stoklengte. Greens waren heel erg mooi en goed (stimp 8 werd aangegeven). Clubhuis is erg oud. Ben benieuwd hoe lang deze club nog bestaat. Waarom de leden niet zelf de verfkwast ter hand nemen snap ik niet of laten de leden een beetje meer betalen. Het interieur lijkt wel uit de jaren 1960/1970. Ook het clubhuis en de kleedkamers zien er onverzorgd uit. Al met al geen vervelende ervaring maar in Nederland zijn we dit soort antieke clubhuizen niet gewend.

Brilliant course, stern test in the wind, one way hitting driver and 7 Iron on a Par 5 the other way hitting three well hit 3 woods and still short on hole number 13. Greens are immaculate, great views, great greens, fairways wide and fair, tough rough. will recommend this course any day.
