Porto Santo Golfe

Een dagtrip naar Porto Santo, in combinatie met een ronde golf op Porto Santo Golfe, werd door ons hotel van harte aanbevolen. Ik had enkele maanden vooraf de transfer van hotel naar ferry, ferry-overtocht, en transfer naar de golfbaan geregeld. Dit betekende 6 uur op, 2x een bootreis van ruim tweeëneenhalf uur en met alle transfers om 21.15 weer terug in het hotel. We arriveerde iets na 11 uur op de baan en met een starttijd om 11.50 nauwelijks tijd voor een snelle lunch in het clubhuis. Eenmaal gestart, rond 12.00h, bleek de baan volledig overboekt met allemaal Deense golfer, hoge handicappers, allemaal 4 ballen. Op iedere tee moesten we 5 tot 10 minuten wachten, soms zelfs langer. Regelmatig stonden we met 12 man/vrouw bij de tee. Om 16.30 hadden we de tee van hole 13 bereikt en omdat we om 17.00 weer werden opgepikt voor de transfer naar de ferry zijn we maar teruggelopen naar het clubhuis. Daar hebben we onze ervaringen gedeeld met de caddymaster. Zij bevestigde dat de baan volledig overboekt was, dat het de opdracht was van het management was om iedereen te plaatsen en dat ze het vervelend vond dat we maar 12 holes hadden kunnen spelen. Ze maakte duidelijk dat ze er verder ook niets aan kon doen. Wat was aangekondigd als een bijzondere golfervaring bleek ' a golfers worst nightmare'. Wat kan ik over de baan vertellen. De eerste 9 holes zijn goed speelbaar, ruime fairways, greens redelijk, niet spectaculair. De tweede negen leek meer te bieden te hebben. Hole 12 eindigde met een prachtig uitzicht over de oceaan. Hole 13 zag er uit als een fraaie par 3, half over een klif. Helaas hebben we deze en de rest van de holes niet kunnen ervaren. Al met lijkt de baan zeker de moeite waard, maar niet om er vanuit Madeira ruim 8 uur voor te moeten reizen. En als dit de manier is waarop ze met hun gasten omgaan mijns inziens een goede reden om deze baan te mijden.

After the beach, the Porto santo golfclub is the only other worthy reason to visit Porto Santo. it’s nicely situated and easily to recognize as it’s the only proper piece of green on a barren island rock. Nice to play it at least once. Probably the most open course I ever played. The first few holes it seems a dull course with not much excitement from the tee. Onward it gets better and from the 10th you start to recognize the typical Seve designs. Forcing you to choose different clubs for several holes than standard driver. The views come in play from after the 10th when playing along some big cliffs. Very well maintained. You wonder how much water will be used to keep this standard for this piece of green whilst barren dusty wasteland surrounds the course. Greens were firm but grips your approach. It won’t bounce of the green and of the cliffs. Pin positions were extreme, probably due to an ongoing tournament ( almost in the fringe sometimes). Service could have been more friendly with some explanations about the course. But the latter I found missing on all Madeira courses. No instructions where to find the practice areas, which are very nice btw. Play from good grass at the range and very clean putting and pitching area. Clubhouse looks good with decent menu overlooking the 18th Course is very walkable compared to other Madeira courses, especially the first 9

It is a beautiful course. Well designed with a lot of challenges, like bunkers and water, placed in the area the ball was supposed to land. The scenery around the 13th hole is just worth the trip. When I played there in march the wind, up to 16 m/s, also created an extra challenge.
