Cape Kidnappers

Vijftiende golfbaan van mijn reis door Nieuw Zeeland. Cape Kidnappers nog maar eens een legendarische naam in golf als je het over Nieuw zeeland hebt. Is het echt zo speciaal als alle verhalen doen geloven? Ja het is echt speciaal. Het begint natuurlijk al met de meest krankzinnige oprijlaan ter wereld. Vanaf het moment dat het hek opent nadat je op de knop heb geduwd om je aan te melden wacht je nog een klein ritje van ca. 15 minuten. Niet over een recht stuk weg. Nee op en neer. Hier een haarspeldbochtje daar nog even over een heuveltje en dan na een kwartier rijden arriveer je eindelijk op je plaats van bestemming. Je clubs worden uit handen genomen en zelfs je auto wordt voor je geparkeerd op de niet al te grote parkeerplaats. Kan ook niet anders want ze laten maar zoveel spelers toe per dag. Het niet al te grote maar mooi uitziende clubhuis is prachtig gesitueerd zodat je de omgeving goed in je kan opnemen. Binnen bevindt zich ook een prachtige proshop waar je uiteraard een en het ander aanschaft als herinnering. Voor het clubhuis staat je golftas al te wachten op de drivingrange om lekker in te slaan. In de verte zie je de blauwe kleur en schittering van de zee. En dus ja je weet dat je weer een speciale dag tegemoet gaat. Uiteraard weer enigzins geluk met de wind vandaag want anders was het een heel wat moeilijkere klus geworden. De baan is een genot om te spelen. Uitdagende holes met voor mij als absoluut hoogtepunt hole 6 een lange par 3 over een enorme diepe geul. Een uitdaging voor bijna iedere golfer. ik had in ieder geval een volle driver nodig om deze green te halen en zoals ik zei het was zo goed als windstil. Maar er zijn zoveel meer holes die alles van je vergen op golfgebied. Op het tweede gedeelte kom je echt dicht bij de randen waarbij de cliffs naar beneden tuimelen. Dit geeft natuurlijk ook prachtige vergezichten over de kust en de zee. De laaste holes kreeg ik nog wat regen maar dat mocht de pret niet meer drukken en om aan te tonen that it is a small world after all. Wie ontmoet ik na afloop in het clubhuis? Mijn eigen caddie van the Hills van een paar dagen terug. Die ging voordat hij naar huis vloog ook nog wat banen spelen. Toeval dat we elkaar dan hier weer treffen. Is Cape Kidnappers speciaal? Ja Cape kidnappers is speciaal. Van het moment dat je het automatische hekwerk paseert tot het moment dat je weer terug door het hekwerk rijdt voel je dat je een bijzondere ervaring rijker bent!

The videos of Cape Kidnappers—showing holes perched on narrow fingers of land with sheer drops toward the Pacific are a blessing and a curse for Cape Kidnappers' promoters. While they attract players from across the world, they fail to show that the fairways are far wider than they appear. There is, quite frankly, no danger of a slippery demise into the ocean. That is not to say the course lacks the ‘wow’ factor. The vistas are spellbinding, but the best photos are captured from solid footing. Beyond the headline-grabbing coastal holes, this club has a wealth of other charms. After a short drive from our accommodation in Napier, we arrived at an unobtrusive sign. Upon pressing the intercom for the pro shop, we were greeted with a cheery: “I’ll open the gate; see you in 15 minutes.” This was no exaggeration. The entire estate, encompassing a working farm, a luxury lodge, and a world-class golf course, spans 6,000 acres. After the drive up the long and winding road, we were welcomed like old friends and assigned a buggy (compulsory). The clubhouse is small but exquisite, with every detail considered. Having arrived too late for a sit-down breakfast and warm-up on the range, the staff kindly packed our meals for us to enjoy during the round. The practice range boasts a fantastic ocean backdrop, while the putting green provides a clear warning of the challenges ahead. We reached the first tee five minutes early to find the course empty both ahead and behind. Our round flowed beautifully, taking just three hours and 45 minutes. We never felt rushed, allowing ample time for photographs and the occasional search for a misfired ball. The course condition is outstanding. The fairways are tight, the greens pristine, and the run-offs are lethal. Many holes, including the ninth, play tricks on the mind. From the tee, it appears to require a massive carry over gorse; in reality, the hazard is much closer than it seems and is easily cleared. The bunkers flanking the green are the far more likely ball-snafflers. Though there is an option to stop at the clubhouse for lunch at the halfway point, we had barely finished our excellent breakfast wraps, so we pushed on. The par-five 15th is the star of the show, featuring a 140-metre drop to the left and a 20-metre fall to the right. Despite its fearsome reputation, the fairway is much wider than it appears on YouTube. This "Stroke Index 1" hole is actually one of the best scoring opportunities on the course. The 16th offers exhilarating elevation from the tee and countless photo opportunities. Inspired by the views, I drove down the middle and reached the green in regulation, only to narrowly miss the birdie putt. Cape Kidnappers delivered a fantastic experience. It wasn’t quite the white-knuckle ride we had anticipated, but it was an awesome day nonetheless.

Played on the 26th of March. Practically on my own. With more than friendly staff welcoming me with a brand-new set of Titleist clubs and a Scotty putter. Maybe the greenfee is a little over the top but I had a super 18 holes with my wife as a caddy (she's not playing unfortunately). Fairways and greens are in perfect shape, worth every penny. Love to come again but it's only a 26 hour flight from the Netherlands. 😪

Although it's been a while, I still think Cape Kidnappers deserves this review, as not many people go there, and they deserve to be mentioned. I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday here :) Words really don’t do it justice. The whole journey getting there, the large wooden gate, the first glimpse of the clubhouse, and that’s before the day has even begun! The warm welcome, playing 9 holes, a lovely lunch, then the second 9 holes, and seeing another flight only once in a while, far off in the distance. The views, the vistas, the natural surroundings – it’s simply breathtaking. This course, together with Kaury Cliffs, stands head and shoulders above the rest for me, which is why I give only these two a 10. If you ever get the chance, go for it! :)
