La Cima Golf Club is a public course that is located about 50 minutes east of Bogotá and situated around 3,000 meters (9,850 feet) above sea level, making it possibly the third highest golf course in the world behind the Yak Golf Course in India at 13,025 feet and the La Paz Golf Club in Bolivia at 10,695 feet. This is a golf experience like no other. I call it “mountain golf on steroids”. To start with, the road up to the course is a white knuckler and once you get there you quickly realize that the parking is sparse, there is no Pro Shop, and the clubhouse is as basic as it gets but heck, you’re here to golf only so don’t expect any other amenities. The course conditioning is a little rough around the edges but offers the most amazing views of the Andes Mountains that you could possibly imagine. This par-70 has three sets of tee blocks ranging from 5290 up to 6074 yards with a course rating of 70 and a slope rating of 145. Don’t be fooled by the relatively short distance on the scorecard since the fairways are tight, there are plenty of blind shots and the elevation changes are extreme. The opening hole exemplifies this – a long downhill par-4 where you need to thread the needle on your tee shot. Anything left or right will result in a lost ball. The 2nd hole is all uphill. That’s when you realize that the air is much thinner as I puffed my way to the perched green. Be prepared to pace yourself and remember that your ball flies further at this altitude. All greens have severe swales on one or more sides to so bring your short game. This trend continues throughout your entire round. One hole is uphill while the next is severely downhill. Sometimes I felt like a llama trying to negotiate the steep terrain but fortunately I had a caddy to tote my clubs as there are no power carts. Unfortunately, the caddies do not speak English, so it made it difficult to communicate at times. The finishing hole maybe the most memorable. This par-4 hole is only 300 yards, but your second shot is straight uphill and very difficult to judge the distance. Once you finally puff and pant your way up to the highest vantage point you realize why you came here. Exhausted but invigorated. This a minimalist design that follows the natural topography and will challenge your every shot. I would love to play this course again not only for the magnificent views but also for some redemption. 18-hole green fees range between US$20 to $40 and the mandatory caddy is $20 + tip. Golf club rentals range from $US16 to $22 depending on the name and model. The strange thing is they don’t have a website, so your best option is to contact Pelecanus SAS to arrange your visit.
