West Berkshire Golf Club

A laid-back club and golf course in the middle of the West Essex Downs. Prices are very reasonable.

The course is fairly straightforward with some nice vistas, but most of the views are blocked by the tree lines of the course. There is little elevation, and the holes are mostly flat.

Although this is not a spectacular golf course, I would wish there were more courses like this.

Quiet, not too difficult and a very relaxing venue for a very large group of golfers.

West Berkshire Golf Club is a par 73 parkland course designed by Robin Stagg and opened in 1975. Although the course sits on an elevated plateau with occasional long-distance views through the surrounding woodland, the layout itself is relatively flat, with only a modest climb around the 4th hole. Tree-lined fairways, well-positioned bunkers, and occasional water hazards create an enjoyable test without being overly demanding. The routing flows naturally and offers a pleasant variety of holes. While there are no particularly memorable signature holes, the course provides an enjoyable round and is a good option if you’re in the area.

Looking at the club's website I was looking forward to playing West Berks. The course & facilities, however, didn't live up to the descriptions given.

The holes were rather boring being mainly flat and straight. We played after several weeks without rain so the maintenance team can be forgiven for the dried up fairways, but the tees were hardly any better. The greens were well kept although again rather flat and uninteresting.

There were no buggies available for late afternoon. The green fees are reasonable but alltogether it is difficult to find any good reason why to play there again.
