Uraburu Golf

De baan was uitdagend, maar vaak ook niet eerlijk. Veel fairways liepen afwisselend naar rechts of links af. De baan was niet zo goed onderhouden.

Uraburu GC is another course set in the hilly terrain above Bilbao. It begins with a blind shot on the first hole and a difficult drive on the par-3 second hole across a lake. If you manage that, all that awaits you are sloping fairways and climb after climb on this mountainous course. The course becomes a little more forgiving from the 10th hole, which is quite a long way from the clubhouse. That’s not the only reason why I recommend taking a buggy. The course isn’t quite as hilly on the back nine, but you won’t be able to avoid some long walks. The 17th hole is a beautiful spot, where you can see the 16th green across the lake, with the valley and mountains on the horizon. The views of the Basque mountains here are magnificent.

Hoewel het hemelsbreed 20 km van Bilbao ligt doe je er toch even over om de bochtige weg naar boven af te leggen. Eenmaal bovenaan de berg denk je, hoe kan hier een 18 holes golfbaan liggen? En als ze er een golfbaan hebben neergelegd dan ben je waarschijnlijk na hole twee alweer uitgeput. Maar dat viel in de praktijk reuze mee. Het clubhuis oogt van buiten als een bedrijfsgebouw. Van binnen ook wel, er staat niet heel veel in. Eenmaal binnen kom je in een grote bak ruimte. De achterwand van het clubhuis is een enorme glazen wand van twee verdiepingen hoog en de golfbaan opent zich voor je. Een verdieping lager waar je op uitkijkt bevindt zich het restaurant en nog een verdieping lager stap je de wereld van Uraburu golf in. . Deed me denken aan de lobby van het Overlook hotel (de Shining), wel wat meer sfeer. Ik heb hem gelopen en dat was pittig maar te doen. Ik hou er ook wel van om aan het einde van je spel ook fysiek wel toe te zijn aan een koude versnapering. Het indelen in terrassen brengt een andere moeilijkheid met zich mee. Tussen de terrassen bevindt zich dichtbegroeid steil aflopend struikgewas. You better be straight! Want het is een balleneter. Geweldige uitzichten. De drivingrange, die is wel armoedig. Daar staat tegenover dat de pro de broer van Jon Rahm is, dus als je nog een lesje nodig hebt? De baan is in top conditie, wel een ballenvreter.

Mooie baan! Veel hoogteverschil en goede snelle greens. erg aardig personeel ook!

From the car park it’s an unusually bureaucratic government style building with cavernous hallways & built on several levels. I did find the pro shop eventually tucked into a car where the buggies are stored. One lady in the pro shop spoke good English & told us about the course & it became clear that there are 2 distinct sets of 9 holes. The views were amazing but it’s a course that higher standard players than I (19.3 at time of playing) pulse appreciate. Genuinely not a whinge but an observation- it’s a tough course, there’s little forgiveness & recovery was an ever present. The greens were great but tough too. At least the views kept my spirits up while my bag got lighter with every ball I lost. Keen to get back now I know a little more of what to expect.
