Lanark Golf Club

Established on 4 October 1851, Lanark is the world's oldest inland course and the 25th oldest golf club anywhere. Scotland's golf scene is dominated by famous links, with only high-end venues like Gleneagles and Loch Lomond luring travelling golfers away from the coast. Lanark, which missed out on having Gleneagles' exclusive hotel by just one vote back in the day, proves we should broaden our horizons. The course's current layout, largely unchanged since it was refined by golf legends like Old Tom Morris and James Braid, is a testament to their enduring design skill. On a bright Monday morning, the course was bustling with golfers and greenkeepers as they began their maintenance week. We arrived early, which gave us time to practise at the chipping area—there's also a nine-hole 'Wee' short course for a quick warm-up. The opening and closing holes are on relatively tight land, so golfers must be mindful of others who may cross their path. This is especially true on the second, a lovely dogleg par-four that shares part of its fairway with the 15th. Lanark boasts three high-quality, distinct par-3s. The seventh is a steeply downhill clip of just 130 yards into a green surrounded by bunkers—and I can personally attest to how easy it is to find the sand. Only two holes on the course follow the same direction as the one before them, meaning the player is never entirely comfortable playing in the wind. The final hole is the club’s trademark—a 200-yard par-three across the first fairway and over a path, with the green located right next to the clubhouse. It's a fitting end, as the first and last holes are the only ones that remain from the club's original six-hole course. I felt no shame in choosing a driver, guiding the ball to within 15 feet of the hole. We stayed for lunch after our game, and I didn't see anyone do better. Sadly, I misread the birdie putt and couldn't claim I was very close to glory. Regardless, this was a heck of a finish to a surprising round at a club with the ambition to climb the rankings.

Bij aanmelden in de pro-shop werd ik vriendelijk ontvangen door de pro, die blijkbaar 10 jaar lang op verschilende banen rondom Utrecht heeft les gegeven. Via Golfamore betaalde ik £40,- voor een greenfee. Lanark Golfclub begint met een middel-lange par 4 gevolgd door een lange par 4 en twee kruisende fairways aan het begin. De baan was glooiender en heuvelachtiger dan ik had verwacht, met name het stuk bij hole 6, de uphill par 4. Hole 8 is de enige par 4 van de baan. De tweede negen begint en eindigt met een par 3. Het is een mooie inland baan en het schijnt de oudste inland golfbaan van Schotland te zijn. Ik besloot te vragen of ik met twee leden mocht meespelen omdat ik alleen was met alleen maar 3 of 4-ballen voor mij. Dit was achteraf wel fijn om wat lokale tips te krijgen. Zoals om op hole 14 met je approach een club meer te nemen omdat er een flinke helling/gat voor de green zit die je niet ziet. Beter dus te ver dan te kort zijn. De lange par 4 vijftiende speelt meer als een par 5 in mijn ogen. De slothole is een lange par 3 van 180 meter, toch altijd wat minder leuk om mee af te sluiten. De baan lag er goed bij met mooie maar lastige greens. Maar ondanks dat heb ik zeer genoten op deze mooie afwisselende baan.

Vandaag deze baan gespeeld. deze baan was het afsluitende deel van een winters reisje naar East Lothian; North Berwick, Gullane en The Glen. Heel wat anders maar zeker de moeite waard. Lanark is de oudste inlandse baan ter wereld en stamt uit 1851, hoewel de uitbreiding naar 18 holes in 1897 door Old Tom Morris plaatsvond. Zeer golvend terrein, je zult geen vlakke greens vinden. Constante ups en downs die prachtige uitzichten en perspectieven bieden op de holes. De baan is niet lang, en heeft aantal kruisingen (met andere holes) die je zelf moet uitdokteren omdat een baanboekje ontbreekt. De greens zijn over het algemeen middelgroot/klein van formaat . Ze waren zacht en hebben een goede snelheid. Mooi en gezellig clubhuis met een prachtige view in het restaurant met prachtig uitzicht op de 18e green en de 1e fairway. We waren te vroeg voor koffie en te laat voor bier (1000-1400). De baan is leuk en maar geeft geen onuitwisbare indruk, maar ik raad het aan als mooi tussendoortje.

Lanark es el campo de interior mas antiguo del mundo y el 25 en general.

Data de 1851 aunque la expansión a 18 hoyos fue en 1897 a cargo de Old Tom Morris.

Posteriormente en 1927 James Braid hizo modificaciones en algunos hoyos resultando básicamente el recorrido actual.

Terreno muy ondulado, no vas a encontrar ningún hoyo llano. Constantes subidas y bajadas que dan unas preciosas vistas y perspectivas de los hoyos y la zona en general.

El campo no es muy largo pero esto no hace que resulte sencillo.

Los greens son, en general, de tamaño medio/pequeño y sin excesivas ondulaciones. Tienen muy buena firmeza y velocidad.

Aquí no vas a encontrar golpes ciegos a excepción de la salida del 9. Por lo demás básicamente lo ves todo.

Bonita y acogedora casa club con una galeria en el restaurante con grandes vistas al green del 18 y calle del 1. Esta zona resulta ideal para comer al acabar la ronda

Probablemente este campo sea un gran desconocido para la mayoría de no escoceses pero lo recomiendo de forma especial, creo que va a gustar a jugadores de todos los niveles.

Een prachtige inland linkscourse met uitstekende oefenfaciliteiten zoals puttingen chippinggreen en een slagkooi voor de driver en houtjes. De ontvangst was zeer vriendelijke in de proshop en het onderhoud is van tee tot green boven gemiddeld. De prachtige uitzichten en leuke holes maken deze golfbaan tot een bijzonder hoogte punt na afloop in het clubhuis aan de gasten zijde nog een drankje gedaan waar je prima zicht heb op de green van 18 en das altijd leuk. We komen hier zeker nogmaals terug.
