Waterville Golf Links is laid out on a beautiful piece of dune land. Bordered on the west by the wild Atlantic Ocean, on the north by the River Inny, and on the south by native peat bog. The course is relatively flat, with a bit more dunes and undulation on the back nine. The clubhouse is well-designed and atmospheric, featuring beautiful photos of the celebrities who have played the course. You can hit from grass on the driving range, although the sandy ground makes it a bit tricky. The course was redesigned in the early 2000s by Tom Fazio, a famous American architect. His influence is seen in the relatively wide fairways, which help keep the course playable—even in strong winds. We played from the white tees, which measure about 6,000 meters and were certainly challenging enough (especially in winds of force 6). We played in late May, and the fairways and greens had not seen much growth yet, so the course conditions weren’t at their best. But the surroundings and layout are truly fantastic—really fun and interesting to play. The 3rd hole is a stunning dogleg right along the sea. The back tee of the 17th hole is the highest point on the course and offers a breathtaking view. It was an amazing golf experience on a true links course!

Our round was part of The Irish Experience, a trip by The Golf Traveller along 3 great Links courses Tralee Golf Club, Ballybunion Golf Club and Waterville Golf Links and 2 park courses Adare Manor and Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. See there for the respective ratings. From the lively and historic town of Killarney, the drive of more than an hour to Waterville Golf Links is already a bonus. The route is entirely on the famous Ring of Kerry with all its history and beautiful views. You get in the mood and the feeling creeps up on you that little can go wrong today. Waterville Golf Links is beautifully situated on the Atlantic Ocean with wonderful views all around, partly over the course itself, partly inland with mountains in the background, but of course mainly over the sea. A true links course. The clubhouse is modest, but neat. Highlight is the small, but very well stocked shop, the best of the 5 courses we visited during this trip. A beautiful and varied assortment. The restaurant located on the first floor offers a beautiful view over the course and the desire to play increases once more. Unfortunately, the driving range was closed today for maintenance, but that didn't spoil the fun for us. All preparation on the big putting and chipping greens then. And that under the supervision of Payne Stewart, whose statue is placed near the putting green. Waterville is -just like Tralee- a wonderful links course with -unlike Tralee- mainly very wide and inviting fairways, so you can launch your tees shots with great confidence. Little can go wrong there, but the challenges come with the approaches. Sometimes because of the length, sometimes because of the beautifully placed green complexes. Personally, I thought it was a joy to play this course. A good caddy (Adam) certainly contributed to today. He was only 19 years old, greenkeeper on this course and on occasions also acting as a caddy. He does that well, friendly and relaxed, but with good directions and tips. It felt like we were playing the course as a team. Highlights: actually the entire course is one big highlight, but what stands out are the three par-3 holes 4, 13 and 17. Beautiful to see from the tee boxes, but the beauty is treacherous, because they are certainly not easy. On each of these holes, a par feels like a victory. A nice closing hole 18 (par 5) too. The first somewhat narrower fairway of the course, followed by an inviting second shot and a difficult approach to the beautifully situated large green. We were lucky again with the weather conditions, but unlike at Ballybunion, more severe weather conditions may not hit very hard here because of the generous fairways. And then, after playing hole 19, the drive back over the Ring of Kerry towards Killarney awaits. What a day this was! A golf day to remember. Waterville was not on my bucket list. If you haven’t played here yet: put it on yours!
