Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club – Leadingcourses Review Southport & Ainsdale was one of the biggest surprises of my trip and quickly became one of my favourite links experiences. I had the first tee time of the day at 7:00 a.m., and I can highly recommend it. The morning is often calmer before the coastal wind picks up later in the day, allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty and strategy of the course. The round starts in a unique way with a Par 3 opening hole. It’s an unusual start for a championship links and certainly not an easy one, immediately demanding a confident swing. Standing on the first tee with the clubhouse behind you and golfers watching from the putting green creates a fantastic atmosphere right from the start. The course itself is beautifully routed through the natural dunes and offers a wonderful mix of strategic golf, firm fairways and memorable holes. It may not currently be an Open Championship venue, but it absolutely delivers the quality and character of a top-class links course. Playing early meant we completed the round in around three hours, leaving plenty of time to relax afterwards. A delicious traditional breakfast in the clubhouse was the perfect finish to a fantastic morning. Three interesting facts about Southport & Ainsdale: * It was the first club to host the Ryder Cup in Great Britain, welcoming the matches in 1933. * The course has hosted the Women’s British Open, the Senior Open, and numerous prestigious amateur championships. * It is consistently ranked among England’s Top 30 golf courses and is regarded as one of the finest links courses outside The Open rota. Southport & Ainsdale exceeded all my expectations. Friendly, authentic, beautifully maintained and full of character—it offers everything you could want from traditional links golf. If you’re visiting England’s Golf Coast, don’t overlook S&A. It’s a course that deserves a place on every golfer’s itinerary.

Campo Ryder 1933,1937.

Southport & Ainsdale GC has been a reminder since joining that it has been a two-time Ryder Cup host. The course starts from the clubhouse with a clear par 3. Like Formby Ladies there are large areas of low heather. Combined with the tall yellowish grass and tall pine trees it is visually interesting. The top holes are the eighth, a bunkerless par 3 whose green forms an elevated plateau. But especially the sixteenth hole, played along the railroad tracks (behind them you will see golfers on another famous course, Hillside). Here is a little-seen fairway bunker where you don't want to end up. An already deep bunker below the hillside, the wall of which is reinforced with palisades forming a crazy wall.

The course at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club measures 6803 yards (6220 meters) from the back tees and winds its way amongst sand hills and dunes. The course is a magnificent test of golf, especially with the sea breeze and profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide a challenging and immensely enjoyable day. The spectacular clubhouse creates a splendid setting for unwinding after a round. The main lounge and patio to the front of the clubhouse provide stunning views across the course, including the 18th green and 1st tee.
