Llanymynech Golf Club

De ontvangst is al enorm gezellig en leuk! Dit is een bijzonder uitdagende, afwisselende en interessante baan in Wales met veel hoog/laag en links-rechts schuin aflopende fairways. Echt veel hoogteverschillen bij deze goed onderhouden baan. Bijvoorbeeld hoge tees en lage greens of juist andersom. Het is een baan die je zelfs in Wales weinig tegenkomt. Deze baan willen we zeker nog een keer spelen volgend jaar!

Een hele bijzondere golfbaan week deels in Wales ligt en UK. Ontvangst is super vriendelijk en de uitleg over de diverse holes is erg fijn dat helpt je door de baan heen te komen. Het uitzicht op de bovenste gelegen holes is schitterend. De oefenfaciliteiten zijn prima met slagkooi om de spieren los te maken en een practice area tot 200 mtr echter alleen met eigen golfballen en geen drivingrange ballen beschikbaar en een kleine puttinggreen. Het Clubhuis is niet echt traditionele bouw maar alles is aanwezig kleedruimtes en bar. P kan hier ruimschoots ook achter het clubhuis maar daar wil nog wel eens een drive vanaf hole 18 op landen. Dus aan de zijkant p is het advies. De baan is uitstekend onderhouden en de greens zijn eerlijk en de snelheid goed. Soms kruizen de holes elkaar en dan kan je op een drukke dag hier nog wel eens een balletje verwachten vanaf een andere hole. Een prachtige baan en een aanrader voor deze regio. Tenslotte speel je hier in twee landen te gelijk bijv op hole 4. Gelopen met e trolley maar er zijn een redelijk aantal buggy’s aanwezig.

Overall it is a beautiful golf course. Quite hilly with many holes from top to bottom and back up again. Nice layout. Despite the trees, there are still open areas, so you have to take the wind into account today. Notorious gusts of wind that are troublesome during the game. Course is very well maintained. Good and beautiful soft sand in the bunkers and the greens are good, short and relatively fast! A must-play course. Some of it is in England, some of it is in Wales. Hole 4: 'drive in Wales, Putt in England'! it says next to the teeing area. On hole 7 it says again: 'Croeso in Cymru'! (Welcome to Wales). Especially second 9 a lot of headwind. Hardest holes are 13/18. Most beautiful holes - actually all on this special course.

We starten met een hole par 3 - verrassend!

Overall is het een mooie golf course. Vrij heuvelachtig met veel holes van boven naar beneden en weer naar boven. Mooie lay out. Ondanks de bomen zijn er toch open stukken, waardoor je vandaag goed rekening moet houden met de flinke wind. Beruchte windvlagen die lastig zijn tijdens het spel. Baan is zeer goed onderhouden. Goed en prachtig zacht zand in de bunkers en de greens zijn goed, kort en relatief snel! Een baan die je gespeeld moet hebben. Een deel ligt in Engeland, een deel in Wales. Hole 4: ‘drive in Wales, Putt in England’! staat er naast de afslagplaats. Op hole 7 staat weer: ‘Croeso in Cymru’! (Welkom in Wales). Vooral tweede 9 veel tegenwind. Moeilijkste holes zijn 13/18 door die fikse tegenwind die ons met name op de tweede 9 parten speelt. Mooiste holes - eigenlijk allemaal op deze bijzondere baan. Op hole 15 voelen we wat spetjes die langzamerhand opkomen tot steeds iets meer regen op hole 18.

Wales or England?

One of the quirky things about Llanymynech is one doesn’t really know where it is! So much so that hole number four, a dog leg left par four of only 323/340 yards is where you tee off in Wales and putt out in England. An elevated tee box encourages the brave to go over the trees in a straight line to the green. Or take on the acute corner and get on it two. Either way this SI9 hole is quite playable.

Llanymynech is actually in Wales, however as the only way to get there by car is through England, it carries an English postcode.

LLanymynech almost plays a cluster of holes at a time differently. Arguably giving you more variety in just 18 holes.

Then you get the 18th, again with an elevated tee with a mound right in the way as you take your drive. In reality that mound shouldn’t be in play, but you know, sometimes, it just is! In stark contrast the 9th is a relatively open hole but is the hardest hole on the course being a par 5 at 419/546 yards, SI 1.

Another unique feature about Llanymynech is when you’re at the top of the hill you can see up to as many as five counties. These counties are Powys, Dyfed, Clwyd, Shropshire and Staffordshire. There is a map at the top so you can identify which landmarks you are seeing as you brave the highest part of the course. Naturally, it is absolutely beautiful on a warm summers day and absolutely miserably on a cold wet one!
