Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club

The Cathedral Course is a parkland layout in Wiltshire with a long history, first opened as a 9-hole course in 1888 by J.H. Taylor, later expanded by C.W. Limouzin, and redesigned by Simon Gidman in 1989. The course plays over undulating land, climbing up towards the Salisbury racecourse and back down again, with hole 10 providing one of the steepest climbs. The standout feature are the views towards Salisbury Cathedral, which creates a memorable backdrop. Highlights include the drivable par 4 9th, offering a genuine risk-and-reward tee shot, and the par 3 13th, set in a tree-lined amphitheatre. Fairways were in good condition and the greens ran true, although not especially quick. The bunkers were a weak point, with stony sand and thin coverage in places. Facilities include a short range, chipping and putting areas, plus driving nets. The pro shop is under new ownership, offering everything you’d expect plus a second-hand club section. The clubhouse is welcoming if a little dated, with friendly staff making for a positive experience. Overall, this is a course worth playing if you’re passing through Wiltshire. Not without its flaws, but the layout, views, and atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop.

De meest verbazende 9 holes baan die ik ooit gezien heb, wel een mooi plaatje over Salisbury, dat dan weer wel. Het is eigenlijk een groot grasveld naast de renbaan (voor paarden) waar ze een 9 holes golfbaan tussen de 18 holes golfbaan en de renbaan is geplaatst. Routing kan beter, soms moet je letterlijk over de renbaan heen slaan en dan onder het hek door kruipen om bij de fairway te komen. Greens zijn niet te snel maar leuk en wat verwacht je nu eenmaal voor 11 pond! Dus zit je op de camping naast de renbaan en heb je nog wat tijd over? Gewoon doen en mee maken?

The Cathedral (18 holes) and Bibury (9 hole) courses are maintained in excellent condition and playable all year round. The condition of some of the bunkers is being addressed.
