The Abbey Hotel, Golf & Country Club

Abbey Hotel Golf Course is a resort-style parkland layout designed by Donald Steel in 1978. The course is relatively flat, with overlapping loops of nine and several water features that add interest and challenge. The standout holes include the par 3s, which offer good variety, and the 17th, which requires a carry over water to reach the fairway. The layout features some quirky, enjoyable holes throughout. Course condition was inconsistent during the visit. Fairways were acceptable, but greens were slow; tee boxes showed heavy wear, and bunkers contained stones in some areas. However, a major £1 million renovation project is currently underway, including the removal and relocation of holes on the front nine. Facilities include a driving range with InRange tracking, a large putting green, and a small but well-stocked pro shop. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Abbey Hotel offers an enjoyable resort golf experience with interesting design features, and the current investment has the potential to significantly enhance the course in the future.
