Ballyliffin Golf Club is the northernmost golf club in Ireland and features two full-fledged 18-hole links courses: The Old Links and The Glashedy Links. We played both courses in one day with a strong northerly wind; a real challenge, therefore. The reception in the pro shop was very friendly. The green fee was all-inclusive, with a trolley, a token for practice balls on the driving range, and a beautiful yardage book in a nice leather folder (see photos). If you want to play a serious round on links courses you don't know, such a yardage book is actually indispensable. It allows you to check the layout of the hole and where you should or shouldn't be. The clubhouse is modern and practical, and the food and service are good. The Old Links opened in 1973 and is the flatter and slightly easier of the two courses. The greens are also more playable. From the white tees, the total length of the course is nearly 5,900 meters and a pleasant challenge. The Glashedy Links was built in 1995, features greater elevation changes, and is the most spectacular of the two courses. We played from the golden tees, and at 6,265 meters, that was tough. On many holes played against the wind, you hit a long iron to the green. The Ballyliffing Golf Club is truly a hidden gem, where not many guest players come yet. Highly recommended and guarantees a great golfing experience.

Pollan Links is a new nine-hole short course at Ballyliffin GC. With a length of 1075 yards it is really short. It is ideal to walk the course before playing at The Old or Glashedy Links. The greens are nicely shaped and the holes have the occasional classic links bunker. Ideal for beginner players. I wish there were more places like this.

First Impressions - great clubhouse with views over the intimidating courses!
We paid a lot (€240 per round, plus extra for a buggy), so our expectations were high...
The course is a very challenging Links course - narrow fairways, unforgiving rough, fast greens, challenging weather - rain & wind!
The one thing we missed was sea views, as only a couple of holes allow those and this was not what we expected for a links course on the Wild Atlantic Coast. I would imagine it looks better (less scary!) when the weather is good.
The course was generally in very good condition, although the greens had recently been spiked - we complained afterwards and were promptly offered a partial refund, which demonstrates a good attitude to customer service.
A lot of other players were from the USA and many had hired caddies - I suspect they were expecting gnarly old Irish men with great stories to tell - however, the caddies were aged around 18 and no doubt knowledgeable, but maybe not as expected!
We were badly held up behind some Americans, with a caddie and who played incredibly slowly and neither the players or the caddie adhered to usual etiquette and allowed us to play through - 5.5 hours for a 3 ball is unacceptable.
Despite this a stunning challenging course to play as a one-off treat!
