The Berkshire Golf Club

The Berkshire Golf Club also has two 18-hole courses. They are marked Red and Blue. Both will celebrate 100 years of existence in three years. They blend perfectly with the surrounding natural environment. Each hole is played separately from the others. Mature plane trees, birches, chestnuts, and pines provide majestic walls for the undulating fairways. The Red course has a very unusual design. The configuration of six par 3s, four par 4s, and five par 5s provides a lot of variety and fun. The course also ends atypically with a par 3. To achieve a good score here, you need a straight and balanced game, otherwise you will quickly get used to chipping sideways from trees or cutting the ball out of heather. The Blue course is played on flatter terrain than the Red. It starts with an extremely difficult, nearly 200-meter par 3, whose tee is located directly in front of the clubhouse terrace. The green is located on a distant plateau. It's not exactly the easiest hole to start with. There are many other notable holes on the Blue course, but it is the final sequence of five par 4 holes that makes this course challenging but exceptional.

Gisteren op Worplesdon vroegen we aan de Pro waarom geen enkele van de 30 Engelse clubs die we tot nu bezochten EV laders heeft, en ziet: bij binnenkomst op the Berkshire springen gelijk de laders aan de muur in het oog. Voor £ 5 kan je je auto volladen, dat is nog eens een meevallertje tussen alle torenhoge greenfees!

We speelden 36 holes op beide banen en het is hier wel mooi geregeld dat 's morgens op de ene baan en 's middags op de andere baan alleen 2-ballen zijn toegestaan, heel relaxed!

We beginnen al om 8 uur op Red en gelijk valt op dat zowel Red als Blue beter Purple and Pink hadden kunnen heten, want alhoewel de bloeiende heide ontbreekt, wordt dit ruimschoots goedgemaakt door de prachtig gekleurde rododendrons die visueel veel toevoegen aan de baan. Het karakter van zeker de eerste negen is dat de fairways een gelijkmatige breedte hebben, redelijk vlak zijn en wordt omzoomd door heide en dichte bebossing. Op de tweede negen komt er meer glooiing in de fairways en die lus had mijn voorkeur. De par 3,10e is duidelijk de signature hole, prachtig.

Het onderhoud is werkelijk fantastisch, nog beter dan op Sunningdale. Daar wordt aan de begroeiing misschien meer aandacht besteed, maar de fairways en greens zien er hier onberispelijk uit en spelen heerlijk.

De bunkers zijn alleen wat minder goed. De wanden zijn net zoals op Sunningdale glad, zodat ballen naar het midden rollen, maar waar op Sunningdale het zand in het midden van de bunker grof is en de bal goed afremt, wil in de bunkers op de Berkshire de bal nog wel eens van de voorwand door de bunker naar de achterwand rollen, waardoor je een vervelende downhill ligging overhoudt. Een kleinigheid, maar soms onplezierig!

Vond ik bij Sunningdale vanaf geel veel par 4's relatief lang, hier zijn die duidelijk korter en daardoor soms wat leuker om te spelen. Uiteraard zijn er maar 6 par 4's op Red en dat maakt de baan afwisselend met veel prachtige par 3's.

Na de prima lunch in het grote clubhuis (met jackets and ties te leen in de kleedkamer!) begint de middagronde op Blue met een par 3 die eenzelfde do or die karakter heeft als de 10e op Red. De Blue als geheel voelt iets anders aan dan Red doordat de bebossing meer gevarieerd is, zowel loofbomen als dennenbomen sieren de fairways waar op de Red voornamelijk dennenbomen aanwezig zijn, en ook de bunkers zijn soms wat anders gevormd. Ook op Blue kon de 2e negen mij meer bekoren door hun gevarieerdheid en glooingen. Het onderhoud is op beide banen gelijk, fantastisch dus. Alhoewel de Red hoger staat aangeschreven, kon ik moeilijk kiezen, maar had ik wellicht toch een kleine voorkeur voor Blue.

Na 36 geweldige holes zijn wij uitgeput, maar de auto opgeladen, zodat we na een geweldige dag vrolijk huiswaarts kunnen keren!

Played the Blue course today just an amazing experience as always. Catering is excellent staff always helpful looking forward to play here again.

The Berkshire is surely one of the finest venues to play golf and why it doesn’t receive even more acclaim is a mystery to me.

From the moment that one drives through the gates, this is a place which oozes quality.

And the wow factor is heightened when the mist rises and, beyond the tranches of heather, the first green and its blue and white flag emerges.

RED

Golf World is correct in listing the Red ahead of the Blue. Although both are as beautiful as one another and a marvellous test. The course is charming, and this stretches to the pro shop and clubhouse. The clubhouse veranda is beautiful and sits elevated over the course, looking out over the first hole of the Blue course.

The practice facilities here are commendable for a traditional heathland course, where many fall short in this area. However, the range is located below the first tees of both courses and therefore a steep walk up from the range to the first tee is not ideal. I am nit-picking of course. The property as a whole is very impressive.

The Red course is unique in design. The configuration of six par threes, six par fours and six per fives provide for much interest, variety and entertainment. You need to be a straight and steady game to score well here otherwise you can very quickly become too acquainted with the trees and heather and therefore find yourself chipping out sideways and scrambling for par – bogey most likely.

A previous outing here was playing for the Old Radleian Golf Team vs the current crop of golfing talent at the school. This was two years ago when my brother was the school’s Team Captain. My teammates decided that my brother was much better than I and placed me against another. A shame as I haven’t walked these fairways with my brother, despite being on the same property 3 times previously. However, it was a good thing I didn’t play against my brother as he shot a solid 2-over that day. I, on the other hand was below average. I took my game down 18 and thankfully prevailed after an outrageous 50-foot snaking putt uphill from left to right.

The Berkshire is so still and quiet and commands attention at every moment. I recommend adding the course to a Berkshire/Surrey itinerary. You will not be disappointed.

BLUE

Baby Brother Blue.

I have commented on The Berkshire as a whole property in my review of the Red course. Here, let’s just talk the course.

I believe I have played the Blue on two occasions. Both against Wellington College when representing Radley College. Both losses. This is mainly down to two female golfers representing Wellington. Two golfers that went on to compete at the highest junior levels and on the Ladies European Tour. Alexandra Peters and Heidi Baek.

The first hole on the Blue course is unusual. A par 3 of 217 yards with heather all the way to the green. A tough start for sure. So tough that our team captain (scratch handicap) was so nervous that he shanked it down into the trees on the right. How he made even a bogey from there I will never know. We all had a chuckle – him not so much. I greened it – obviously.

The course layout is remarkably different to the Red with four par threes, three par fives and eleven par fours – 5 of which come back to back from 14 to 18, all short. There needs to be some variation here in my opinion. More scoring options.

However, a stellar course and the members at The Berkshire should count themselves as very lucky to have a beautiful 36 hole layout at their disposal.
