Bigbury Golf Club
About Bigbury Golf Club
Bigbury Golf Club was originally founded in 1923 when the then landowner, Cdr Charles Evans gave over some land to allow a group of local lads to play golf. Originally starting out as a 9 hole course, 4 more were soon added. Several years later Cdr Evans decided to extend the course to a full 18 holes. Bigbury Golf Club is located in an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) on the coast of South West of Devon. The current course was designed by JH Taylor, one greatest architect/designer of his time.

Bigbury is a seaside treat. Perched on the South Devon coast with views of Burgh Island, the routing makes the most of the elevation changes. The greens were excellent and demand smart placement from the tee or a shaped approach shot to get close to many pin positions. The variety of holes keeps you thinking, and the whole place oozes holiday-by-the-sea charm. Bigbury is joyful, scenic, strategic golf, and I’d return in a heartbeat.

Fantastic views to the sea and also Burgh Island on the back 9. Great views to the Avon river on the front 9. Out of the way near the coast can be tricky to get to because of the Devon lanes. A well laid out course with quite a history. As it is on the hills/cliffs near the sea it drains well and is therefore playable throughout winter. Most fairways are treelined and there are a number of bunker hazards to negotiate. Hole 1 is quite intimidating a drive down beside the road be careful not to hook it out of bounds. Wind is always a factor up there which means reading the short par 3s can be difficult. Hole 7 is a long Par 3 at 200yds which is also difficult. A couple of interesting holes on the back 9 like 15 an uphill par 3 that requires precision to get it on the green. Hole 16 is a dog leg which is very tempting to cut the corner if you have that shot in your arsenal. Welcoming clubhouse with good food and local ales. Small practice facility and plenty of parking.

Leuke golfbaan. Fantastische golfshop. Prachtig terras. Vriendelijk horeca personeel. Gezien de hoogte zeer winderig. Het middenstuk is wat minder spannend, beetje op- en neer. Leuk om mee te maken, maar blijft voor mij bij een eenmalige kennismaking.

On the one hand, this course has a glorious location with clifftop views to die for. On the other hand, one could say it's steep and windswept. One way or another, it'll certainly take your breath away. A nicely maintained course with a warm welcome for visitors at the club. Quiet when I played but no doubt dependant on the weather and the holiday season in this lovely part of Devon.

Bigbury Golf Club
Bigbury Golf Club is proud to have JH Taylor as part of its history and to this day are indebted to him for designing our beautiful course. Bigbury Golf Club was originally founded in 1923 when the then landowner, Cdr Charles Evans gave over some land to allow a group of local lads to play golf. The course initially starting out as a 9 hole course, later 4 holes were added. Several years later Cdr Evans decided to extend the course to a full 18 holes and enlisted JH Taylor and FG Hawtree to design what is undoubtedly a remarkable cliff top course, even to this day.
