Royal Birkdale has long been ranked among the top 100 courses in the world. And rightly so. At the entrance to the iconic clubhouse and pro shop, you will be welcomed by a club employee who will explain the system, show you where the driving range is, give you the code to the locker room, etc. Then you check in at the pro shop. The driving range is a few hundred meters from the clubhouse. The first tee is not far from the parking lot. At the small modern building, you will be welcomed by the starter, who will recommend the right tee based on your handicap. Take their advice and leave your ego aside. Royal Birkdale is a tough golf test. The course is very compact, and there is not a single hole that deviates from the high standard. Three of the last five holes are par 5s. The course is about the experience, not the score, so enjoy the course, which will once again host The Open in 2026.

In 2017, Jordan Spieth won The Open at Royal Birkdale in spectacular fashion. The Open will take place again at Birkdale in 2026. Architect Tom Mackenzie has given the track a major overhaul. On Hole 5, a very large dune on the entire right side of the fairway has been removed and a kind of waste area with water has been created. It has become a spectacular short par 4. And a brand new par 3 has been designed that now plays as the 15th hole. The old 15th now becomes the 14th hole and is a par 5 with a new green. The old green of the 14th will soon be used as a new practice facility. That is necessary, because at the time I played the practice facilities for this top course were completely inadequate. Because quite a few holes have undergone changes, the course is messy and doesn't really look good. The greens were also downright disappointing. Way too much grass, slow and bumpy. I have never played on a top course (with high green fees) where maintenance was so poor. The clubhouse is beautiful with many photos of all the major championships that have taken place at Royal Brikdale.

Where does one begin when trying to review Royal Birkdale? A good start would be its absolutely stellar course, which was in fantastic condition when I played. This is a fun course as well, and unless you are chasing low scores is very playable. If, however, you are chasing lower scores, then it's very well-placed 123 bunkers, and other hazards will come into play. Stray shots will also be caught in Birkdale is lethal fescue.

The conditioning of the course is grade A+, as you would expect from any multiple open hosts, with slick and pure greens, tea, and boxes, in better condition than some fairways I have played recently and long white carpet-like fairways.
The clubhouse is an art deco icon and can be seen for many points on the illustrious golf course, no more so than when heading down the 18th towards its large bowed bar/dining room windows. It contains everything you could possibly need, a large bar and restaurant area, a huge upstairs function room with fantastic views of the 18th Green. They're also modern changing rooms and a fabulous pro shop containing all the Royal Birkdale and Open memorabilia you could wish for. Landscape paintings of the course and portraits of previous golfers adorn all the rooms inside the clubhouse and really at the premium feel of Royal Birkdale.
The one thing that surprised me most was the staff and for the better. I have played some prestigious courses in the past and found the staff to be reserved and, in some cases, rude, but not at Royal Birkdale. The staff could not be more friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much, and they were always available for any questions, no matter how silly you felt asking them, and this ethos was present from the starter to the halfway hut attendant and also the bar/restaurant staff.
I don't think I'll be going too far to say this is one of the best experiences I've ever had when visiting a golf course, and I would love to return again.

Had a great experience here both on and off the course. The clubhouse has a great bar area with a good food and drink selection. Great changing rooms and facilities along with a big pro shop. The golf course was excellent with stunning views. Would highly recommend it.
