About Walton Heath Golf Club

Walton Heath Golf Club was founded in 1903 and the initial course (Old Course) was opened for play in May 1904. At that time James Braid was the Club's professional and was to remain in that capacity until his death in 1950. The course was laid out by W. Herbert Fowler, at that time a leading amateur golfer. It was his first golf course venture and he went on to become one of the leading golf course architects of his era. He created one of the finest examples of heathland golf, which so closely resembles the traditional seaside links courses, out of a jungle of heather, gorse and bracken. The first nine holes of the New course (also designed by Fowler) were opened in 1907, with the full 18 holes being opened in 1913.

Walton Heath is home to two exceptional heathland courses in Surrey. Aside from the opening hole on the Old Course—a par-3 played in front of the road—all 35 remaining holes are played on a single large, open expanse. This expanse is occasionally broken up by clusters of old trees, which also surround the entire perimeter of the course. The two courses intertwine, so it’s important to pay attention to the colors of the flags on the green flags. Challenges include not only bunkers positioned lengthwise but, more notably, rather unconventional long crosswise bunkers, whose edges are overgrown with mature clumps of heather. A magnificent example of course design. Next to the pro shop is a small cottage that serves as the James Braid Museum; Braid worked here for decades as a pro. Occasionally, they commemorate the 1981 Ryder Cup here, when a composite course was played consisting of 16 holes on the Old Course (holes 1 and 3 were not played) and 2 on the New Course (holes 12 and 13). Only six other 36-hole courses in the UK and Ireland can claim that both of their courses are ranked in the UK & Ireland Top 100.

Bucketlist course. Yes. First of all, Wendy - such great service from start to finish. The best clubs always seem to stand out when it comes to great service. Walton is on the top of the list - and I have played a few top courses. The Old course is such an experience to play. The design, greens, tees and the nature. Perfect day! Some really unforgiving rough and bunkers. Keep it in play! Had a talk with a 82 year old gentleman who had switched from Wentworth to Walton. He did not regret it. And I can see why. Such a lovely man with some great advice.

Played these two lovely courses, the Old has been closed the whole week because maintenance of the greens, that makes the judgement a bit lower. The New course in excellent condition, some of the greens so nice, that you can expect in the summer. You really have to hit the fairway, otherwise you are in the heather, and hardly can make a shot. Nice restaurant and bar, with lovely ambiance.

The New course had been closed the whole week, due to maintenance of the greens, that makes the judgement a bit lower. Fantastic course, the first 8 holes really tough with long holes several +400 yds Par 4. The New course challenging with some really nice greens, you could expect you are in the summer. Nice clubhouse with plenty of space in the locker room and nice atmosphere in the bar and restaurant.

Very friendly staff at reception, bar/restaurant and shop. Nice to relax on the patio in front of the putting green, overall setting peaceful and nice. Maintenance is good and the course is pleasant to play (if you stay out of the heather). Of course the golfcourse is at it's best when everything is in bloom - I caught the back end that period, very nice still. But 18 holes worth, well, to say it gets mundane sounds spoiled, but... Overall definately worth playing (bucket list), but wouldn't label it as "wow! ".

Old Course

9.1

Course flag18 holes

Walton Heath’s Old Course has featured in the World’s Top 100 rankings every year since the inception of the rankings in 1938. The course designer, Herbert Fowler, liked to test the extent of the golfer’s repertoire of shots. The Old Course has many demands, but its greater length and generally smaller greens mean that more “Scottish shots” are likely to be needed in this Surrey haven. This is a par 72 championship course that stretches to 7406 yards, though a more accommodating 6786 yards off the daily tees. Most of the yardage will seem to happen in the first six holes, which is as tough a start as you will find.

Walton Heath’s New Course shares the same open heathland setting as the Old and is a fine Championship course in its own right. It opened for play in 1907 as a nine hole layout, and extended to eighteen in 1913. The New stretches to 7200 yards off the back tees, 6648 yards off the medals, and has been ranked in the UK and Ireland’s Top 50 courses for more than ten years. This is a serious golf course.
