Dunbar Golf Club

Bij aankomst zie je dat er hard gewerkt wordt aan het nieuwe clubhuis en drivingrange en ondanks dat is het P en ontvangst goed geregeld. In de proshop waar we vriendelijk werden ontvangen en een breed gala aan souveniertjes te koop zijn kregen we goed advies over hoe en wat en dat de oefenfaciliteiten tijdelijk zijn aangepast. Men verwacht dat het nieuwe clubhuis dit najaar geopend gaat worden maar ook nu is er een tijdelijke kleedruimte aanwezig en kan je vooraf of na afloop wat eten en drinken. Dit is dus een échte traditionele Links course negen holes out en negen holes in langs de kuststrook. Met mooie oude gebouwen en een stenen muur als OOB lijn. De vergezichten zijn prachtig zo langs de kust lijn en de tweede negen holes zijn vaak met tegenwind een behoorlijke uitdaging. Het onderhoud is bijzonder goed en de green strak en snel en soms verrassend met diverse hoogtes en slopen erin. Voor de echte links course liefhebbers een must play. Evt een caddy inhuren voor je ronde kan ook vooraf geregeld worden en is zeker behulpzaam om een goede score te kunnen maken. Een dagje links golf waar genieten van alles om je heen eigenlijk het belangrijkste. Niet de goedkoopste maar wel een die als kwalificatie voor The Open bekend staat en dat is toch wel bijzonder om te bespelen.

Vanuit Edinburgh vertrekken wij naar Dunbar Golf Club. Op de site staat dat het adres gewijzigd is. Er wordt namelijk een nieuw clubhuis gebouwd en waar deze verrijst, is nu al een tijdelijk clubhuis geplaatst. Eenmaal aangekomen zie je dat er gebouwd wordt en het huidige onderkomen tijdelijk is. Bij de proshop worden wij weer vriendelijk en gastvrij welkom geheten. Wij krijgen uitleg over de eerste tee en het practice net wat er hangt. Voorzien van een scorecard en potlood gaan wij eerst lunchen voordat wij naar de tee gaan. Bij de eerste tee staat de starter, Dom, op ons te wachten. Heel relaxt wijst hij ons de route, door de verhuizing van het clubhuis is de routing ook licht gewijzigd, en vertelt ons dat wij kunnen gaan wanneer wij willen. Het loopt namelijk goed door in de baan. Hij heeft twee verzoeken aan ons: 1) Aansluiting bij de flight voor ons te houden. 2) Veel plezier te hebben. Wij beloven plechtig om ons hieraan te houden en starten met een par 5. Er staat een stevige bries, sommige leden speelden daarom slechts maar 9 holes, maar een goede ‘linkservaring’ is er eentje met wind, zo prenten wij ons in. Regen hoort daar uitdrukkelijk niet bij (;-)). De wind duwt onze ballen naar rechts en wij zien dat de baan droog is. De bal stuitert namelijk haaks naar rechts. Hole 2 is een par drie, van wit 160 meter, die door het hoogteverval en met wind in de rug met een ijzer 9 gespeeld kan worden. Goed voor het ego, zullen wij maar zeggen. Voor hole 3 moet je door een opening van de muur die de daaropvolgende 7 holes (3 tot en met 9) de baan aan de rechterzijde begrenst. Over de muur is out-of-bounds. De holes zijn gevarieerd. Er zitten korte en lange par 3, 4 en 5’s tussen. Je hebt doglegs, rechte holes, open schoten, blinde schoten, voor ieder wat wils. De rough is niet extreem bestraffend dus als je bal door de wind in de rough belandt, kost je dat niet direct een slag. In de bunker belanden vaak wel. Het zijn potbunkers die je verhinderen om veel afstand te maken of de bal snel te laten stoppen. In de meeste gevallen kost het je een slag. De greens zijn heerlijk snel, hard en eerlijk. Je moet goed putten om te scoren. De tees zijn prima onderhouden, evenals de fairways. De routing is fantastisch. Van green naar tee is in de meeste gevallen geen 30 meter. Hole 18 is een mooie, niet al te lange par 5 waarbij het gevaar schuilt in de burn net voor de green. Te gretig zijn kost je zomaar een slag. Als er al een minpunt te vinden is, is het dat je achterin de baan (7, 8 en 9) uitzicht hebt op de enige atoomcentrale van Schotland. De pluspunten compenseren dit echter ruimschoots. Dit is golf in zijn meest pure vorm.

We visited Dunbar while the old clubhouse was still in use — simple, but a very pleasant and welcoming place to be. We also saw the outline of the new (and rather large) clubhouse being built. A member told us there had been quite a bit of debate around it, and I do hope it won’t detract from the cosy, down-to-earth atmosphere the club currently has. Our round itself was unforgettable. We played in a solid three-club wind: at one point, I hit a pitching wedge from 80 yards into the wind, watched it take off… and land 30 yards behind me. Perfect conditions for match play, we laughed all day. With the wind at our backs, the 300+ yard drives were equally entertaining. The routing is excellent and the course is a true links in every sense. It may not be as famous as nearby North Berwick or Muirfield, but it’s also far more affordable; hopefully it stays that way once the new clubhouse opens. Service in the clubhouse was very friendly, and the members we met were warm and welcoming. All in all, highly recommend playing Dunbar.

I had the pleasure of playing Dunbar GC in late November, joining a member who kindly invited us and guided us around the course. Having local knowledge here is a real bonus, from knowing where to miss to understanding how the wind shapes the strategy on each hole. The club is currently building a brand-new clubhouse (a significant project that’s turned out to be more extensive than originally planned), and once completed, the routing of the front nine will be adjusted slightly. It was great to hear some of the behind-the-scenes insights from our host. As for the course: classic links all the way. Nine holes out, nine back, hugging the coastline with views that make you pause even when the wind is trying to knock you off balance. We played in a proper three-club wind, which made the round both challenging and memorable. Exactly what you hope for on a Scottish links in winter. The cottage halfway has no real function but it reminded me of a similar building on Praia d’El Rey. Dunbar is a bit of a hidden gem, sitting just that bit further along the coast from heavyweights like Muirfield, Gullane and North Berwick. But it absolutely holds its own. The layout is fun, fair and beautifully natural, and even in November the course was in good condition. I had a lovely time here : great golf, great company, and a course I look forward to revisiting when the weather is more forgiving. Dunbar is well worth the detour.

After a very good experience on the Glen and Winterfield we were anxious to see what Dunbar GC would bring us. It's one of the more expensive ones. The route to the club is easy and we found a very busy car park. It must be very popular among golfers. This we noticed as we were teamed up with a friendly Canadian guy. On the tee there were only four-balls. The pro shop was busy and there was a starter to shoot us away. The practice facility was a bit far from the 1st tee so we sticked to putting. The weather was good. A strong wind but this is common in this area. (I8 to cover 110Y against wind !) The course has interesting holes but narrows half way. And it's 9 holes out and 9 holes in. (cannot remember if there was a halfway house) The course was a real links. Not to many trees and holes next to each other. Especially in the narrow part I found this not always safe. You need to wait for oncoming traffic. The scenery, right on the coast, is beautiful. Great views. I am still not sure if the balance "value for money" for this course is positive. But you need to play it before you know it. And everyone has his/hers own opinion. It's a par 71.
