Only played “an emergency 9” as Leading Courses Leo would describe a quick extra loop - around front nine on the Portland, but what a pleasant surprise. I’ll admit the 1st is long, flat and had me wondering initially whether we should have played the par 3 course instead, but I’m pleased we didn’t as thereafter the course quickly comes alive, & becomes far more interesting than first impressions suggest. In fact, the opening almost disguises how good much of what follows is. There’s real charm here. Some lovely movement in the land, visually attractive holes & greens with much more interest and character than you might expect from a so called “second course”. I was particularly taken by the greens and the variety of the holes. Quietly thoughtful golf. Played in golden hour, with that Ayrshire light doing its thing, it had a magic of its own. What I liked most is that the Portland doesn’t try to imitate its famous neighbour or trade off it. It just has its own understated appeal & holds its own. An emergency 9 holes that felt anything but an afterthought. I left wishing I’d had time for the other 9, which probably says all you need to know.

Royal Troon is every inch a championship course. It’s easy to focus on its Open pedigree & miss just how genuinely great the holes are. One thing we learnt is that Troon only gained Royal status in 1978, making it the last Open venue to receive the honour. The outward 9 has a lovely rhythm to it. The holes ask questions rather than shout at you. Position matters. Angles matter. Misses matter. Staying out of bunkers really matters. A few years ago I’m not sure I’d have fully appreciated all of that & might even have wondered what all the fuss was about. Now I absolutely get it. The Postage Stamp is tiny, theatrical & somehow even better in person. But I found myself just as taken by plenty of other holes, especially #6 & #7. Properly good golf holes. The back 9 is hard, with a run of long two shotters holes that keep testing you. We played it with only light early season rough but when that gets up in summer I’d imagine it’s a proper brute. Then there’s the Railway at #11, one of those holes whose reputation somehow undersells the reality. Magnificent & properly intimidating. The finish has real championship gravitas & it keeps tightening the screws all the way in. The approach into 18 in particular has a seriously intimidating feel, especially when you’ve seen how close the green sits to the clubhouse windows. A nervy one to finish. The clubhouse is a huge part of a day at Troon also. We had a full tour & it was excellent. The views from the snooker room over the 1st tee are superb & downstairs you feel almost on top of the 18th green. History everywhere, displayed wonderfully. We played on a day with lots of training flights from nearby Prestwich airport coming in low overhead. Surprisingly rather cool, with some great photo moments. It somehow added to the day. I forgot to include in my Prestwick review that our caddie told us the most ridiculous thing he’d been asked was “why did they build a golf course so close to an airport”!! 😂 What I loved most is that Troon doesn’t need to show off. It knows exactly what it is. Tough, elegant, subtle & deeply satisfying. A links that reveals more the more you look. A serious course, but never a joyless one.

Como recién sede del Open (2024), tenía mucha curiosidad de jugar este campo. Los primeros hoyos recuerdan mucho a The Old Course en St Andrews, donde los hoyos parecen acoplarse naturalmente, con el tee del hoyo siguiente a la derecha del green del hoyo anterior. Los 6 primeros hoyos ofrecen unas vistas perfectas al mar, y uno se imagina la importancia del viento! Si como nosotros hay suerte y poco viento, se pueden hacer buenos resultados. Las cosas se complican a partir del 7 con un green diabólico rodeado de bunkers que parecen ataúdes, en todos los sentidos de la palabra. El famoso Postage Stamp del hoyo 8 merece su fama. Pocas veces 120 metros se te hacen tan “largos” si no llegas al green! En general la jugada es evitar los bunkers, pero con los casi cien bunkers (hay 98) es inevitable probar algunos. Con casi total seguridad hay que asumir un golpe más sí o sí. Si podéis, entrar en casa club para ver las vistas del green del hoyo 18 para darse cuenta lo cerca que esta el cristal de la ventana de un posible filazo!

Le Royal Troon Golf Club c'est le plus links des Links ! Il coche tous les critères et en est donc la parfaite définition. Mais c'est avant tout un des plus vieux parcours accueillant The Open Championship avec pour dernier vainqueur en 2024 : Xander Schauffele. Nous avons eu la chance de visiter le clubhouse, les différentes salles avec toute l'histoire qu'elles portent en elles. Les vues depuis l'intérieur sont sublimes mais très vite on comprend qu'il faudra jouer l'attaque du green du 18 avec des vitres à quelques mètres juste derrière. Comme dans tous les clubhouses ayant accueilli The Open, The Claret Jug siège dans le hall. Le proshop est bien fourni avec autant de goodies à l’effigie du parcours que du trou n°8, le fameux Postage Stamp. Petit passage par les cages d’échauffement, putting green puis on se présente au starter. Le trou 1, « Seal » est impressionnant du fait du hors limite tout le long matérialisé par la clôture bois séparative de la plage. Le 2 « Black Rock » et le 3 « Gyaws » peuvent paraître similaire à leur prédécesseur (trois Par 4 de même taille), mais la forme des greens, la position des pot bunkers. J’ai eu la chance de réaliser des birdies sur 2 de ces 3 premiers trous, mais aussi découvrir les roughs locaux. Clairement un enfer ! Il faut absolument faire preuve d’humilité et rechercher le fairway avant tout. Les 3 trous suivants continuent le chemin le long de la mer avec les mêmes difficultés. Si l’horizon semble dégagé les fairways restent étroits et les roughs très vite présents. Le trou 7 « Tel-el-Kebir » nécessite une parfaite maîtrise de sa mise en jeu car pas moins de 6 pot bunkers sont présents à la retombée. S’en suit le fameux « Postage Stamps », le trou 8 un par 3 court mais au green petit et parfaitement protégé. Le 9 nous emmène au bout du parcours, à proximité de l’aéroport car oui, le parcours est sous le couloir aérien. Et vu l’activité aérienne le jour de notre partie, il n’y a pas un trou qui s’est joué sans un passage au-dessus de nos têtes. Le trou 10 « Sandhills » est à mon sens tout aussi prestigieux que le Postage Stamp. EN effet de sa mise en jeu jusqu’à l’attaque de green, il faut composer avec le muret séparateur de la voie ferrée, plus 4 ou 5 arbres à côté du green qui ont tendance à attirer les balles. La suite se fait en zigzaguant sur le retour entre l’aller et les rails. Le trou 17 « Rabbit » est un sublime par 3 avec en fond l’hôtel de Marine Troon. Place enfin au 18 où la fameuse attaque du green doit se faire en tenant compte de la présence du clubhouse juste derrière. La principale difficulté du parcours est le fait de rester sur fairway, car dès qu’on sort, les roughs sont quasi injouables. Les pot bunkers également où certains nécessite parfois une sortie… par l’arrière ! N’oublions pas que nous parlons d’un parcours The Open, donc la difficulté est de mise…
