About Troon Links - Darley

Recently rated as the fourth hardest course in Scotland to play to your handicap, Darley is classic uplands links of gorse and heather, much tighter than Lochgreen and is not for the faint-hearted. If Darley is slightly shorter than Lochgreen it is certainly tighter with unforgiving heather and gorse hugging both sides of many fairways. Darley is indeed a challenge, demanding the straightest of tee shots to avoid the renowned Scottish hazards of heather, gorse and whin, which abound. Challenging, strategic and a true test of golf is how the locals describe Darley, which, like its sister course Lochgreen is also considered of the links variety.

This is a municipal course so some areas look scrappy and people are out walking their dog or just crossing the course. However the golf holes themselves are fantastic, with challenging tee shots, high rough and difficult approaches. Bunkers are proper links pot bunkers and tees, fairways and greens are all in good condition. Fairways were burnt out and there was a breeze so I had a fantastic links experience. If this course was in the Netherlands it would easily be in the top 10, some holes are similar or even better than Royal Hague, just a bit more scrappy and a lot more accessible!

Played this course during winter, winter mats were out and the flags were randomly placed in awkward places on the green, that aside, I understand it’s difficult during winter.

The course itself is pretty decent, once you’ve crossed the road after the first hole it becomes interesting, some interesting holes!

Having looked forward to playing this so much the actual gap between expectation and reality was pretty significant. The greens are immaculate and the course is undeniably challenging at all levels. However, the fairways are cratered with divots, rabbit damage and the gorse probably needed a trim back somewhere around 2019!

To be fair, they seem to be underway with a lot of repairs and as it's a municipal course it's obviously been under a tight budget given the times.

Municipal course.

Mooie holes die veel worden omringd door gorse (een heel vervelende struik met gele bloemen).

Greens waren geprikt maar evengoed nog sneller dan je zou verwachten

Darley is a traditional links course, which offers a true challenge to even the most accomplished golfer. Featuring tight fairways and plenty of hazards, it is widely recognised as one of the countries toughest golfing challenges. At a little over 6300yds, Darley is not as long as Lochgreen but if you score well here, you'll have played very well indeed.
